Swedish Style Herring?

I have some friends that visit Toronto several times a year from Sweden , but complain they can never find good herring here - they purchased some herring from the St. Lawernce Market which they labelled as "just Okay".

Any idea where I can get some really good herring (not stuff in jars) to satisfy these finicky Swedes. Herring in mustard sauce and other sauces seem to be their preference.

Try going to Starsky in Mississauga, they have all kinds of herring thats been pickled for different amounts of times. I think it would probably be similar to Yummy market but it depends where you live!

Starsky has lots of herring but not that much variety--and nothing I've seen that comes close to the cures used in Swedish or Danish herring.

I got some loose herring fillets at Yummy Market from plastic buckets marked Swedish Herring. That they were, very sweet, $24 a kg.

Have seen those, too. Nothing like the ones Charles and I are talking about.

Try Yummy Market on Dufferin, near Finch. It has a zillion types of herring - in jars, in buckets, you name it. It's a herring wonderland.

Surprisingly, I find the ones at IKEA ( 3-4 different marinade ) pretty appealing. Nice texture and not too tangy! Personally, I prefer the 'Dill marinade' one
I've eaten a lot of herrings whilst working in Norway. However, none beats the ones I had at 'Aquavit' in NYC!! Samuelsson really knows his stuff!! Lucky New Yorkers!

Good luck. Abba brand herring, jarred alas, is the only example of this type I've seen around and it's not totally awful. The last I saw of large fillets in sauce was at the long-dead Danish Food Centre on Bloor 20+ years ago. Why not try them on some of the Ontario artisanal smoked trout available around the GTA? Doubt that's available in Sweden.
