Nian Gao in YYC

Hi All!
I'm looking for Nian Gao near Centre St. (not really wanting to drive to T&T)
I couldn't find any at Tops nor could I find any non moldy ones in Chinatown.

Maybe I'll make some. Haha.

I grew up eating my Chinese grandma's Nian Gao... she used to make the brown sugar one and the coconut one for me. Since moving away from the family I still miss it every year around this time. I tried the ones at T&T, don't think they compare to my grandma's.I used to love this best sliced and pan fried with egg.

I've seen them at various Chinese bakeries in Chinatown and some of the restaurants even make and carry them. Maybe check again now that it's closer to CNY.

My boyfriend's korean and we eat dduk frequently - the plain kind with savoury sauce and the sweet dduk... outside of the fact that they're made from rice, I don't find that it compares to nian gao, the texture is a bit different as is that flavours.

Did you try the Chinese bakery's? I use to see them in the Edmonton ones

If you're willing to substitute the Korean version (deok), you can get it at Arirang, next to Community Natural Foods (10th Ave SW and 12 St SW). Never seen mouldy rice cake there :)
