ICA: Garces v. Solomonov "Battle Passion Fruit" [spoiler]

Hmm, when did we start having four judges?

If they are going to do this as a regular thing, they need a bigger table, or thinner judges.

Garces won, by the way, with one of the largest margins that I can recall (of course having four judges can distort the scoring margins).

Solomonov's food looked perfectly fine, but I agree with the judge that commented that Garces seemed to be taking more chances with his dishes. Solomonov seemed to be cooking his usual food -- which I am sure is very tasty -- and just adding some passionfruit because he had to.

Garces' dishes looked fantastic. But damn does he sweat!

And the four judges did looks stupid at that table -- it's clearly a three-top!

I did not notice sweat on the Mexican chocolate battle.

he was drenched in a couple of the close-ups and dripped sweat right onto the raw pork loin when he was butchering it. but in Garces' defense, Medina was looking pretty moist too!

I just figured out why using the word "moist" to describe a human being in any fashion has always creeped me out.

I agree that Garces is pretty boring... His comments are really only when requested upon by the announcers... Nothing like Forgione's 'That's the Canora we know' (when he was wetting his pants in the Next Iron Chef Finale) or things Batali or hell... any of the others except for Kat.

Apparently his food seems to be incredibly good... From the competitions in the reality show to the Iron Chef shows. It's funny though, he doesn't appear as if he should be awkward... He speaks well, has a normal voice, and should be funny. Cause after all, it is a TV show... and he should be being helped with that part of the presentation.

      He still kills his food.

I don't like the four judges... and I just want Ruhlman and Steingarten to be two permanent judges.. If i'm not going to be seeing Nigella's big bubbly ass and hips, I really don't care to see her. Man vs food guy is ok too.

Though I won't stop until I get this guy on as a judge.

the judges looked like sardines packed into a can at that table, it was rather silly...and i could do without Lee Schrager, he just doesn't add anything worthwhile.

i thought there was something "off" about the energy of the entire episode, it was strangely quiet and subdued. the most "exciting" thing was the Chairman's tie, and it wasn't exciting in a good way - it gave me a headache. they REALLY need to do something about his wardrobe.

Garces' food looked delicious - i wanted to try every dish...i just wish he was more interesting & exciting to watch - i need something to distract me from the sweat pouring down his face :)

Sounds like they need to add another judging criterion - showmanship, worth 5 points?

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_... (spoiler link)

lists 3 other episodes with 4 judges and max score of 80. One was in the pre-season, and one was the last Garces battle (sparkling wine). I had the impression from the sparkling wine episode that they were trying to include a wider range of expert skills, including one was some sort of food stylist.

did you happen to notice that bal arneson's accent was about 1/4 the thickness that it is when she is hosting "Spice Goddess?"

              Yup, same with Nigella Lawson.
