Where to find herring (not in a jar)?

ajr524 Jan 30, 2011 10:26 AM

Just moved back to Ft. Lauderdale from NYC. Was a huge fan of the pickled herring in cream sauce from Russ & Daughters. Looking for a place in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Palm Beach to find good herring (not in a jar).

You might try giving Fernanda's a call. That or just stop in, even if they don't have herring in cream sauce, there is this great keg of aged balsamic vinegar behind the counter that you may find irresistible...like I do!

Joseph's Classic Market in Boca has it. I don't eat the stuff myself but my mother raves about it.

I know this place well in the early 90's the original owner was a customer of mine the food was good even back then......however there was a bit of turmoil between the owner and his wife not sure how that worked out....... i have not been back too much sopranos stuff for me .....I am sure my ex business partner stills goes there...he is more comfortable with that kind of thing

Have you tried "SAGE" on Hallandale Beach Blvd.? I just left Florida after being there for the month of January...I had an AWESOME 'new for me' Fish....Homemade Pickled Lox (thick cut pieces)..they give you lots of onions and sour cream with it...FABULOUS and pricey..but worth every penny..As for your question, yes. they do have herring by the piece not in jars also new & old pickles not in a jar either...Can hardly wait to go back next year!!!

Penn Dutch plus they have great Nova sheds that are pink... Plus they always have St Pauli Girl @$7.99. Dark and regular. They bake rye and pumpernickle bread too.
