haven't been for years, but Malaga, 73 bet 1st and York, was excellent spanish food. Dumpy place, but great stuff. Mariscada with green sauce, shrimp ajillo, appys, red and white sangrias. Try it.

+1 for Cafe Boulud.
For Italian (not Italian American "red sauce"), I love Sandro's on 81st near 2nd. Great pastas, especially the bucatini all'amatriciana, which is the best I've ever had (including Batali's).
Definitely go to Two Little Red Hens for cupcakes. Best in the city. My fave is the Brooklyn Blackout.

In the special meals category, I highly recommend Cafe Boulud. It's much further west, on 76th, just off Madison, but totally worth it. Superb cuisine, an excellent wine list, polished service, and lovely ambiance.

re: bomberrwa
It's not my neighborhood, but I do eat there occasionally. Two other places which I can recommend:
Uskudar, on 2nd Av., b/t 73rd & 74th, for very tasty Turkish food;
and
Spigolo, on the corner of 2nd Av. & 81st, for superb contemporary Italian cuisine.
