9th Avenue in the 40's -- what is new and good?

It looks like there have been a couple new places opening up on 9th Avenue in the 40s. I am looking for a place pre-theater. Pretty much open to anything. Any suggestions? Thanks as always....

  1. Not new but I like all of the three Yum Yum Thai restaurants. Great food, fresh ingredients.

    2. I'm going to try La Silhouette this weekend. It's not exactly the area you're talking about–it's 9th Ave. in the 50s–but the menu looks great, and the reviews so far are positive.

      1. There is another relatively new spot called Elsewhere that looks promising, though have not yet had the chance to try it out. Its around 42nd or 43rd off of 9th. Plumpdumpling, look forward to hearing about La Silhouette as well.

            Esca is hardly new. And as far as "good" goes, that's a matter of opinion. Our one experience there 10 years ago was totally disappointing in every respect.

            I think you mean Lattanzi. It's on 46th St., aka Restaurant Row. It's not new either. We've never been, so I can't say how good it is.

              Pure Thai Shophouse is low 50's-small portions but low prices, so leans towards order many dishes and sampling a lot. I suggest ordering "dry with soup on the side". The 3 star dishes are real thai-level hot.

                Any favorite dishes there? How do you find the deliciousness of their food compares to the original locations of Wondee Siam and Pam's Real Thai?

                  I live far from 9th ave so only get there every now-and-again, usually after or before shows or Lincoln center. We prefer eating afterwards, which is one reason we have been able to eat at Pure more than the other 2 restaurants. The others close too early to go afterwards. Pure shophouse is open until 1pm.
                  Pure has a very different menu from the other 2 mentioned. It is modeled after a noodle shop in Thailand, so they say. It is mostly soups and noodle dishes, but it does serve a few wok dishes. No curries. The soup broths were all delicious and rich and they do not dumb down the spice. The pork that topped the dish was quite delicious as well.
                  The wok dishes were also good. We had the Wok-chili tumeric with beef-perhaps the hottest dish I have ever had. Very good. We also liked the ratchaburi crab and pork dry noodle. That is mild but very good. We have also had the sukhothai pork noodle soup, which was mildly spicy and very tasty. The noodle dishes can be ordered "Dry" or "Soup". I like dry, and then they also bring you the soup broth on the side.
                  They have a sweet drink called Recau which was tasty. The thai iced tea was good, but all David Banks restaurants have good Thai iced tea. David took his best Front of the house people from Land East to work here when it opened. Perhaps he also took his best chefs, too. I suspect that may be why Land East has been less that stellar lately, but just my speculation. Land East was a favorite of mine for quick weeknight Thai on the UES for years, but the past 3 times the curry was watery, so I wonder if the chef-owner also took his best back-of-house with him to Shophouse.
                  We ate at the Wondee on the east side of the avenue before we discovered they had the "secret" thai menu. I am dying to try the food off that menu and welcome suggestions from it.We will go back to try suggestions off that menu one day when it gets a little warmer!
                  We have not tried Pam yet.

                    I think everything I've tried from the "secret Thai" menu has been quite good. One word of caution, just in case: The spicy shrimps on that menu are raw. They're very tasty, but raw.

                Well, OK, it's not new, you're right. I go at least 6x a year to Esca and love it.

                I meant: Lazzara. Not new either, but great pizza and real old school.

                New....hmmm? Does Ma Peche count?

                  Ma Peche is on 56th St. between 5th & 6th - kinda far from "9th Ave. in the 40's."

            2. The Mexican bistro Toloache on 50th closer to 8th was positively reviewed in the NYTimes. I've gone twice since the review came out and it is totally a great place. The tacos are the way to go. Some of the dishes use too much truffle oil but otherwise its good.

              1. We ended up at Chimichuri Grill on 9th Ave and 44th. Theater was on 42nd St and with the cold and slush, no one wanted to walk too far. I had been there a couple times before. The place was packed, service was so-so, but the food was very good. Last time I ate there, it was a much better value -- it feels like they raised their prices substantially. I really dislike when a special turns out to be 50% higher in price than their average entree and the waiter doesn't go out of his way to let you know. $44 for a rib eye (it came with a slice of tomato and some watercress) vs $28 for most entrees left us with a bad taste (no pun intended). Thanks for the other suggestions.

                1. Just saw there's a new Asian/BBQ place opening up, looks like it's where Xie Xie used to be; it's called Ember Room and is from Todd English and the guy behind Kittichai. Should be interesting to hear how it is.
                  I also forgot in my prior post, there's a Neapolitan pizza place that sets a new standard for pizza in the area: Zigolini's. Not only excellent pizza, but also has a nice neighborhood feel, with one long bar extending most of the restaurant.

                    Did the Ember Room brunch yesterday. Previously bought a discount card thru Gilt City to offset the pain. Pan-Aisian Dim Sum, I guess. Very interesting. Some misses, mostly hits. Variations on classic Dim Sum items: BBQ Short Rib pan-fied Gyoza outstanding; "thai pastrami" meatballs rather flat (No actual pastrami, just the spices used supposedly); "Duck Bun" was, in fact, make your own duck burrittos...little bucket of delicious "pulled duck" with hoisin, scallion, cuke strips and mini mu shi pancakes...peking duck lite? Yum! Great chinese sausage studded fried rice and another fried rice with chunks of short rib. Coupon came with two adventurous cocktails per person...sake& champagne, pineapple mojitos...yikes!

                    Our "bill" came to $89 for two but the Gilt City coupon covered it all.

                    Gorgeous thai-influenced decor, very, very knowledgeable staff despite only being open a month. Can't wait to go back for dinner. Ridiculous beers on draft I hear.

                      Was at Ember Room for dinner a couple of nights ago. Really enjoyable experience with a few issues. The check-in area is quite cramped and we had a tough time getting to the hostess, but once we did we were seated promptly (we had a reservation and showed up on time). Our waiter seemed to be over worked and as a result the service was mediocre to good. We ordered two appetizers - the chicken salad and the pastrami meatballs. The chicken salad was on the dry side and not something I'd order again. The meatballs were great. For the mains we had the short rib and sea bass, both of which I really enjoyed, the sea bass being slightly better. We also had the Korean beef fried rice (which unfortunately came out well after our mains) as the server unintentionally put in an order for something else. The fried rice was spectacular, likely the hit of the night.
