First Timer.....One Dinner, one Breakfast, and one Lunch

Ok fellow hounds, I'll be traveling to New Orleans next month for work and would like a few recs. I've got one dinner, one breakfast, and one lunch on my own and need to know which places you'd hit with such limited time. I'm staying at The Roosevelt (Baronne St, I think) and won't have a car, but don't mind taking a cab. I love steak and seafood, but for dinner would probably want to try something "New Orlean'ish" themed, if that makes any sense. For Breakfast, I'm thinking Beignets @ Cafe' Dumonde, unless there's something or someplace better. And for lunch I'd like to try some thing along the lines of a crawfish boil, but I'd also like to try a Muffaletta from Central Grocery. But, for the Muffaletta, how do they sell it? Is there only one size or can you get like a half portion? If you could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

  1. You can get a half portion, which to me was still a lot.

    1. You can't do much in three meals but i'd say stick with beignets for breakfast, BBQ shrimp at Mr. B's for lunch and maybe Bon Ton for dinner. All are in walking distance and have reasonable cost and are very "local". While Dominica, MiLa, August and Luke are also near, and very good, they aren't straight local cuisine places.

      Now on your next trip think about branching out to some of the other fine dining places that take local in different directions

        There you go, your lunch pick is finished. Don't consider anything else. BBQ shrimp at Mr. B's. Done.

          I just had it, and too would recommend it.

      2. I would have breakfast at Camellia Grill. It's a little closer to your hotel. I would go to Mr. B's for BBQ shrimp and gumbo for lunch and Galatoire's for dinner. There's not a better place in NOLA than Galatoire's for NOLA cuisine.

          i think the festive atmosphere ("experience") of galatoire's is a hoot, but i would not cite it as the best nola cuisine, nor do i think they are necessarily regarded as such... depends on what youre going for. if purely for food, one can be a bit disappointed in the uninspiring execution at galatoire's.

            I'm not sure that I can agree with you here.

            For me, it is all about the food, and the pomp and tableau is secondary. Of course, I also have plenty of memories.

            I feel that Galatoire's does quintessential NOLA cuisine, as well as anyone does. The service has always been top-notch too.

            Just count me as one vote "nay."

        2. OK, sounds like the breakfast, lunch and dinner won't all be on the same day so I really thought about where I would send a first-timer for those meals on separate days. Here's what I came up with. Breakfast probably Old Coffee Pot or Surrey's, but if it's brunch, that opens a lot of other possibilities like Commander's Palace, Brennan's (that would be Hunt's rec not mine) or Dante's Kitchen. Lunch would be Galatoire's (especially if it was a Friday), August or Emeril's. And Dinner would be Clancy's. I think Clancy's really represents what New Orleans dininig is all about. As for the muffaletta and beignets, those are snacks that should be ingested in between drinks.

            A big grin on the brunch at Brennan's...

            I concur on The Coffee Pot, nee Maxie's Coffee Pot. There, ask for the front table on the patio, right by the street, or one of the tables along the windows. People watching, even in the AM is great!

            As for Brennan's, we were once not fans, and that was when we lived in NOLA. After a very long time, we happened to try them again. We were delighted, and worked them into the next trip. Our guests were so impressed, that they insisted we do them again, when we returned the next year. Each time, they have impressed us, with both the food and the service. I think that I have done a review of each of those visits on this board. Maybe look those up, and judge for yourself. Might not be your thing, and that is OK. Hey, I had to change my mind, and also eat a few of my words. Stuff happens, and things change - sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse.

            PS - though out of the FQ and CBD, Ralph's on the Park has great Sunday Brunches too, and usually a piano, though no jazz band. Just do not sit in the piano bar, as that gets a tad loud. The main dining room is the best of all worlds, as you can still hear the piano - plus your companions. [Grin]

          2. Cafe Du Monde is a must, BUT they can be a great capper for the evening. Instead, I would suggest a more complete breakfast at either Stanely! (Stella's brother restaurant) on Jackson Square, or The Coffee Pot on St. Peter Street, next to Pat O'Brien's. They are different in their venue, and their menus, but each is worthwhile. You will not be disappointed by either.

            The Pan Perdu at The Coffee Pot is excellent, and the Eggs Stella! at Stanley! is delightful.

              Thank you all for the generous recs. It looks like I've got a little bit of research to do. I'm the the type that I'll buy something just to try it and eat only half, because I want to order something else also......just to try it! Haha. In any case, I may try and squeeze in some other places as well, if my work schedule allows. Thanks again

                In that case, be forewarned that portions in NOLA are often large. My DH and I were happy sharing one breakfast/lunch or entree in most places.

                  I agree, and that can carry over to the rest of the Deep South, as well.

                  I rather like the concept of "small plates," and also "chef's tastings," where one DOES get to sample more fare, without having to let half-full plates go back. Guess that it was "how I was brung up," but just have guilt feelings.

                  When reviewing the Deep South restaurants, I more often negatively comment on "giant portions." As we eat without a lot of guests often, my wife and I have some issues with sides, that would easily feed a table of eight. One very nice steakhouse in Nashville dispensed a couple of those on our first night there. Food was very good, but the portions were gigantic. Next night, we were guests at a table for 12, and warned the host. He still insisted on getting 4 sides. Most went uneaten and not because of quality. I talked to the GM, and asked why the filet started at 14 oz. His comment was that most patrons wanted to take home about 4 meals from each dining experience, was was going to offer some smaller portions, for people, such as ourselves. He was starting to get requests for half-portions, etc., so admitted that times were changing. As this was part of a resort, I just cannot imagine people wanting bags and bags of leftovers, but that is just me.

                  NOLA will feed you well. If you leave the table hungry, the management will probably call 911, assuming that you are ill.

            2. I'd totally skip Mr B's.

              Cafe du monde or Croissant D'Or for a coffee pastry breakfast, and I agree with Bon Ton and Galatoire's for a lunch or dinner...Can't get more New Orleans than that! IMO

                youre not a fan of the quintessential BBQ shrimp found at Mr. B's? blasphemy.

                  I'm also luke warm on their version of BBQ shrimp. It is good, but not the ultimate. Actually, Emeril's staff at NOLA (the restaurant) did a better job, as did Ralph's on the Park. Good, but not great. OTOH, Mr. B's has always been very good, and worth the walk across the St. from the Monteleone. I've had some very good meals there, but just fail to see it as the paradigm, that others ascribe to it. Must be my palate?

                    well, i completely disagree with you here. Mr. B's is hands-down he best BBQ shrimp to be hand, imo.. rest of the menu im neutral on, but the bbq shrimp is prime. the large shrimp, the bowl of sauce, the loaf of french to sop it up...have not been able to repeat this experience elsewhere.

                      I think that it is a matter of "different tastes" here.

                      It's no different than my appraisal, and the love that many others, here, have for Mother's po-boys. It is not that they are wrong, or that I am, just a difference of opinion.

                      At least in NOLA, one has choices, and many of them.
