Barbecue in the Vanderbilt area

I posted earlier about a casual place for dinner near the Wildhorse and got a couple of great suggestions. I also am looking for a barbecue place for lunch in the Vanderbilt area. I have read that there is a Hog Heaven and a scary place behind a pizza hut. Is Hog Heaven good? Are there other places in the Vanderbilt area that have great barbecue? I am bringing a group of people from all over the Midwest and Alabama to Nashville, but at least 4 of us are from KC, so we appreciate good 'q'. Any recs?

  1. You do know that Southern barbecue is different from KC, yes? Just so you won't be disappointed when it isn't like what you have at home.

Hog Heaven is the only barbecue place in the Vanderbilt area. It's good, but it's a shack. It's mostly take-out -- if it's warm they have a few picnic tables outside. I have no idea what anyone could have been thinking of talking about something "behind Pizza Hut" because there's nothing to eat in the block behind the West End store. There's nothing in the Vanderbilt area that's "scary" anyway, unless by "scary" you mean "urban."

Otherwise, go to Jack's on Trinity Lane (the one on Broadway downtown is OK though). Martin's in Nolensville is considered by many to be the best in the area, but it's a drive. B&C is in the Farmer's Market and is very good, particularly because they have decent side dishes and not just Sysco coleslaw. Jim n Nick's on Charlotte is a small chain but with an emphasis on quality and scratch cooking.

I agree with everything but Hog Heaven being good. Not in my experience anyway. I'd add Mary's on Jefferson St. to the mix. She has tasty meet and the best sauce I've had in these parts.

    2. Yeah, Hog Heaven is it for the Vandyland area. It's not the best in town, but it's certainly top 10, maybe even top 5 on a good day. But I think that, especially during winter (Hog Heaven dining is outdoors), making the quick trip downtown to have barbecue at Jack's would be a better experience.

And TLF, there was a barbecue restaurant in the space behind pizza hut a few years ago, but it is long gone. You can find a review here: http://thanatos70.blogspot.com/2006/0...

      1. Nashville and BBQ don't really mix. The only good place is Martins and it's pretty far out.

I would explore other options if I were you.

        Just my opinion...
