Black Forest Cake

Leslieville Jan 27, 2011 06:25 AM

I'm in charge of finding a Black Forest cake for a friends birthday. Any suggestions about where a really good one is to be found? I will consider most any area to get to if it's really great cake.

    hi leslieville,

i recently started a thread about cake and someone actually recommended the black forest cake from st phillips in woodbridge: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7618... perhaps give that a shot?

i've personally never had that particular cake from st phillips before but i've had several cakes from them and they have always been satisfying (particularly the chocolate raspberry one, and the strawberry shortcake). if you go, be sure to also grab a cannoli or two....

I used to get the kind that was like the German Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte from Gerhardt on Ellesmere/Belamy. Real chocolate & whipped cream. They did not keep.
My last visit though in 2009 - it looked like the place had changed hands.

I don't fancy the kind that lasts for days in the grocery store coolers for days.

Oh my, no. Those ones are covered in vegetable oil topping, which is why they last for days. Absolutely horrible stuff.

Haven't been, but Fabian's has been recommended on this Board in the past.

Just tried a slice and LOVED it! I have driven by Fabian's for maybe 20 years now and only today decided to drop by; a miserable day so some cake and coffee hit the spot!

Will be going back there :)

It's hard to find a really great one, but I buy Black Forest cakes from Sun Valley on Danforth Ave. They sell the ones from Pauline's Pastries. The last time I bought a few was in December, and they were fine, nothing was left 30 minutes later. http://www.paulinespastries.com

foodyDudey, are they made with real whipped cream? That sounds like a great option for me, as the location is convenient. I am sometimes up for a good BF cake!!!

You could ask Half-Baked Ideas Bakery on Mt. Pleasant
