In Germantown, TN (near Memphis) for 8 months - need eats!

Hi TN Hounds,

I am a Baltimore hound who will be working in Memphis (specifically around Germantown) 4 days a week for several months. I'm sure I can search this board to find downtown Memphis restaurant recs, but what about Germantown? I'll be staying at the Residence Inn near Poplar Ave and Primacy Pkwy. I have an expense acct but would prefer to stay on the moderate end of things with an occasional nice dinner. Does anyone have any recommendations that would be a short drive from my hotel? Thank you and I'm excited to experience Memphis through food! On that note, I will of course also take all Memphis recommendations because I will have the opportunity to drive a bit further out a few times per month.

  1. Germantown Commissary has outstanding BBQ. Memphis is most famous for it's BBQ. Los Torgugas is outstanding Mexican. It's a long drive downtown to Beale Street but you should visit there a time or two.

    Los Tortugas @ 1215 South Germantown Road, Germantown, TN 901 - 751 - 1200.

Walk around Beale Street in downtown Memphis, TN and visit the joints. Go in B B King's and Dyer's Burgers. Walk around inside The Peabody Hotel for a drink maybe and then The Rendevous for some BBQ across the street from The PB. There are some nice restaurants in the area including Felicia Suzanne's for fine dining at dinner, McEwen's for fine dining, Restaurant Iris for fine dining at dinner only, Automatic Slims for drinks and bar food, Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken and South of Beale for good bar dining.
    Felicia Suzzane's @ 80 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 523 - 0877.
    McEwen's on Monroe @ 122 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 527 - 7085.

    1. Only speaking of things that are close to your hotel - Littleman seems to have covered the rest of the city pretty well -

If your hotel is where I think it is, you are basically across Poplar Avenue from the Regalia shopping center, which has several restaurants. Circa is a very nice place that used to be downtown but recently moved to this area. Salsa is pretty good for Mexican and margaritas. Owen Brennan's is a cajun / creole place that always has a good crowd but I've never been a huge fan. They do have a nice bar area. Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is also in the parking lot. If you are lunching in that area, Paradise Cafe has good sandwiches, salads, and smoothies - pretty healthy stuff. There's also a very good wine store in the center - Great Wines and Spirits.

Fairly close by - some other nice, higher-end places to look at are River Oaks, Interim, Napa Cafe, and Erling Jensen.

On the other side of your hotel, across Park, there is another shopping center with a few other places to eat. Nothing particularly special, but a few more very close options - there's a P.F. Chang's, Wang's Mandarin House, and Happy Mexican, which is decent Tex-Mex in a pretty fun atmosphere.

If you drive up and down Poplar there are hundreds of places to eat, though a lot of them will be fairly standard fast food or chains. Swanky's Taco Shop and Humdinger's are fairly nearby and are locally-owned fast-casual places.

      Ruth's Chris

      1. Your hotel is in Memphis, not G'town. The other posts so far are in line with what I'd recommend, but here are few other ideas not too far from where you'll be.

The Belmont at Poplar and Mendenhall is a great bar with very good hamburgers. A locals' joint.

La Taqueria Guadalupana at Ridgeway and Winchester (very easy drive for you is authentic Mexican. For upscale Mexican, Las Tortugas (already mentioned), is outstanding and is in Germantown.

        Taqueria Guadalupana
5848 Winchester Rd, Memphis, TN 38115

Littleman's recommendations are solid and Bulldog covered the good higher end places near your hotel.

But here are my two cents:

Las Tortugas on Germantown Rd in Germantown is a must go to place for lunch. Everything is unbelievably good.
Vanelli's Deli and Germantown Comissary are the other two good lunch places in G'town everything else there is marginal.

While you are in Memphis you must have 1 dinner at Restaurant Iris. It is easily the best restaurant in the city. The chef worked under John Besh for many years and has a similar style to him but it is also very unique. I've eaten at many of the best restaurants in the country and Iris is on par.

You, of course, have to eat a good amount of BBQ while you are here. The Comissary in G'town is great but I'm also partial to Central BBQ, BBQ Shop and Cozy Corner.

You also need to hit up Gus' for fried chicken.

IMO, most of the better restaurants in the city are in the mid-town to downtown areas but fortunately Memphis is very easy to navigate and nothing is more than a 25 minute drive away.

          Central BBQ
2249 Central Ave, Memphis, TN 38104

          Restaurant Iris

          Cozy Corner Restaurant
          745 N Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105

          Vanelli's Deli
7873 Farmington Blvd, Germantown, TN 38138

        2. In Germantown proper, here are my favorites: Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana on Germantown Road (possibly my favorite place in Memphis all together--do NOT go at noon as you will not have anywhere to sit and be in line forever, plus it closes at 8, just a heads-up); New Asia on Exeter (in strip mall across from bike store)--yum Chinese; Russo's NY Pizza for pizza (in strip mall at Forest Hill Irene and Poplar); Sakura (on West) for sushi; had good noodle soup recently at Tao Too in same shopping center as Sakura; Jimmy John's (yes, it's a national chain) for fast subs; Mosa (decent fast/casual pan-Asian) at corner of Kirby and Poplar. If you go slightly east of Germantown on Poplar at Houston Levee is Bangkok Alley for Thai--decent, nothing too exciting.

The other posts covered the various BBQ options in town. For fine dining, the best I"ve had is Restaurant Iris, hands down. I'm excited about the opening of Circa in East Memphis--I enjoyed the downtown location.

          Restaurant Iris
2146 Monroe Ave, Memphis, TN 38104

          Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana
          1215 S Germantown Rd, Germantown, TN 38138

          Bangkok Alley

          New Asia Restaurant

oops- forgot to mention Soul Fish (Village Shops, Poplar and Forest Hill Irene) for excellent fried catfish and other souther soul food. People love the Mellow Mushroom (across from Soul Fish)--I have only eaten there a few times (it's been good), but the lines usually scare me away and I really do like the Russo's pizza, which is practically in the same place. Another thought--for decent sandwiches/coffee at lunch, Java Cafe on Forest Hill Irene, just north of Poplar Pike is a good choice.

These are all GERMANTOWN recs, since that is what you asked for (though, as others have noted, your hotel is really in East Memphis, where there are lots of other good options as well). I'm assuming you'll be working in G'town, so here's what around. It's odd--I've never understood why there isn't MORE upscale eating in G'town, given the fairly upscale nature of the neighborhood.

          2. I actually work on Primacy Parkway so I eat out in that area all of the time. There have already been many good suggestions. I'll throw these out too...

mosa at Poplar and Kirby has very a very good quick lunch. You must also try the porkchop at Mister B's. It's about four inches thick and you can literally cut it with a fork. I have no idea how they get it that tender.

Just west of your hotel is Jim's Place, Napa Cafe, Patrick's (lunch), Thyme, Andrew Michael, Pacific Rim (sushi) and soon to open Acre by Wally Joe,

            Napa Cafe
