Lunch & Dinner in Charleston, SC

My husband and I are coming to Charleston for the first time in April, staying somewhere in French Quarter (we need hotel ideas too). We need some restaurant recommendations. I don't care about price, but don't want anything stuffy or pretentious--just good food of whatever kind and a good experience. We'd be so grateful for any suggestions.

  1. Lots of great places. Check out the recs on Charleston Magazines website. I love Hominy Grill, Slightly North of Broad, FIG, Cru Cafe to name a few. None are stuffy. Amen Street Bar and Grill has great seafood.

    1. I'd look into Husk and McCradys (dine at the bar for a less formal experience).
La Fourchette for classic rustic French food.

        1. The French Quarter Inn just got #3 on TA's best list, so that's where you should start.

All the recommendations you have here are great.

          1. These are great, thanks so much for the suggestions. I think we're going to stay at the Vendue Inn. Where would you eat breakfast in that area?? Thanks again for all the help :-)

Toast is a couple of blocks away. Joseph's also gets good reviews. Hominy Grill is fabulous, but not within walking distance. it's one of my favorites.

Thanks so much Sue, Toast looks perfect for breakfast. One more question--any place in this area or not too far that you'd recommend for nice outdoor seating (any meal)?

            2. Sure. If you want mediocre food but a great view go to Fleet Landing. 82 Queen has a lovely walled patio. Market Pavilion Rooftop bar has a great view. Vendue Inn has a great rooftop too but the view is blocked by condos. Boo. Cru Cafe has a nice porch. The Boathouse on IOP has beautiful sunset views as do Vickery's and Red's on Shem Creek in Mt. P.

Sue, you are great! Thanks so much for this info. I think we're going to try 82 Queen for lunch and Cru Cafe for dinner. I'll try to post something after our trip.

Aw, thanks. Do let me know what you think. I love Cru's General Tso's chicken.

Be aware that Cru's is just next to the horse barns. The smell never bothers me but picky people don't like it, haha!

You may want to have a cocktail at Fleet. Watching dolphins in the harbor could change your life!

                  1. re: Noank Native

Make sure you try Cru's mac and cheese!! Absolutely AMAZING!!!

                2. Wanted to say again thanks for the suggestions. We had a great trip. I LOVED the Cru Cafe, we sat on the porch and had a great meal in a nice relaxed atmosphere. We stayed at the Vendue Inn and I was very happy with that choice. You Charlestonians have a beautiful city.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit. We are lucky and we know it! Where else did you go?

                    1. re: Sue in Mt P

We stayed at the Vendue Inn which I really liked. The second day we had lunch at 82 Queen. It was a great place, definitely worth going to, but the food seemed OK not great. My planning hadn't gone any further, and the second night we were tired and ended up in a place near the hotel (Blossom) which was pretty good. But I totally loved the Cru Cafe and we had a very nice time there in addition to great food. Loved being able to walk to so much, and so much beauty all around. Again thanks for your advice!
