FIRST TIME IN AUSTIN.......

I will be in Austin for about a week very soon and would like some suggestions that are within walking distance of The Austin Convention Center. I am open to all types of food and would like to focus on what locals find to be the very best representations in each category.
I love good burgers but prefer versions that showcase excellent quality beef, buns from a good baker whether in house or across town. I'll probably skip the cheaper fast food type burgers unless someone insists that a particular spot has a must try burger! I've read about many burgers suggested by posters on this board but would like to narrow it down to a current short list of the best available!
After my week in Austin I'll have a car and a copy of Texas Monthly's TheTop 50 BarBQ and will be exploring Texas Hill Country BarBQ and beyond. Is there any really great barbq in Austin near The Austin Convention Center? What about Tex-Mex? Any places that feature local ingredients? Best beer bars, craft beer and really good food too? The best spot for coffee, pour over or espresso? Anyplace that I would regret not trying while in your city? Anything that will have me saying "Wow, I can't find this in Los Angeles or San Francisco!" Info on food trucks, trailers and carts, only if the food is exceptionally good would be welcome too.
My only constraint besides not having a car is that while price is of no concern, I'll be wearing 501's or Carhartts and a t-shirt or work shirt. I won't be bringing any dress clothes.
TIA!

  1. Living in Austin has spoiled me. whenever I go out to eat I wear jeans and a t-shirt and am not out of place (or asked to leave!) in any of the fancy places in town. Same can't be said when I take trips to Houston or vegas!

    1. I'll let mariacarmen know you need information. She's a great, great source and just ret'd. from Austin after a Chowfest......looked wonderful. I'm sure she'll get in touch.

      2. austin definitely has one of the most casual dress codes at restaurants.
i'm from boston and moved here 6 years ago, and i am still getting used to it.
you will not be out of place at all in jeans and a t shirt.

it will be hard to find places where you can say "wow, i can't find this in los angeles or san francisco" though.
