Well they are rating a carne asada super burrito which I assume has carne asada, rice, beans, cheese, crema and guac. Put enough cheese, crema and guac on it and you could serve any kind of mystery meat...and it all would be pretty close.

Taqueria Cancun on Market and 6th is my favorite in the city for Carne Asada. I don't really like the one on 16th, though.
El Castillito is on the list! My favorite for al pastor.
Papalote is my favorite for vegetarian burritos. Their meat is kind of bland for me, saving grace is the salsa.
I like El Farolito for quesadilla, but not burrito.

do you mean taqueria cancun on mission and 19th (not 16th?)

the only taquerias on 16th are los coyotes and pancho villa, neither of which are anything special IMO

Also, does anyone know which of the El Castillitos are connected?

You're right! For some reason, I always misplace the taquerias in the Mission, since there are so many in the same vicinity.

I also like El Castillito for the for the al pastor - except that lately it's been a touch too "saucy". If anybody else has that problem as for a al pastor-carnitas half and half.

I've never had their carne asada so can't comment on that. For some reason I'm always getting something with chicken, pork or seafood at mexican places.

I wish they hadn't wasted a spot on Chipotle. I am virulently anti-Taqueria Cancun but most of my recent trips have been to the location near Precita, not the one near 19th that they visited.

Others I wished they would have added:

La Avenida - better than Gordo's, at least the 9th Ave. location
The Little Chihuahua - better than Papalote in the "gourmet" category
Pancho Villa - most consistent IMO

Can't argue too much with El Farolito at the top, though.

I can understand passing over my two fav's: La Taquaria and La Corneta, but including Chipotle on that list is a travesty. I have just lost mucho respect for that magazine.

It's not really a "top seven" list, it's a ranking of six of the "most popular" (criteria not defined) local burritos—which explains why it reads like a popularity contest—by five local chefs and foodies. They included Chipotle as a ringer. Doesn't sound like any of them liked it, they just didn't think it was as bad as the last two.

Wow, they would have to be really bad to be worse than Chipotle! There's a Chipotle a block from my office, and I've eaten there exactly twice: once because I was curious and once because I had a coupon for a free whatever. The second time I remembered why I hadn't been back after the first time. I can't believe people stand in line for that! And I'm not exactly an anti-Mexican-American chain snob, because I actually got food fairly regularly from the Baja Fresh that was next door to my office.

I had two coupons for a free burrito at Chipotle. I never used the second one.

Maybe the former S.F. chef is having a positive influence at Chipotle... *snicker* http://sf.eater.com/archives/2010/12/...

Thanks. I suppose I should have actually read the article before flying off at the handle!

By "ringer" do you mean sponsor?

They used the word "ringer," which means "one that enters a competition under false representations."

"In a blind taste test ... five experts dig into seven [sic] of the city’s most popular super carne asada burritos, with a ringer thrown in for fun (ahem, Chipotle)."
