Going to Mama's, need another nice restaurant in Maui for dinner

We're headed to Maui in February. We already have reservations for Mama's Fish House, but we're looking for one more nice/splurge dinner location. We're staying in Kaanapali but will have a car and we're willing to drive. Our criteria, in order of importance:

-good food! We're coming from Minneapolis, so seafood is a must. Local Hawaiian food would be even better.
-Nice ambiance/service: We're on our babymoon and won't have many chances to have a romantic night out for a long time coming. Also looking for good service, some place that's not too loud.
-Near ocean would be nice

We're thinking about Spagos, Merriman's, and Banyon Tree. Anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions? Thanks for your help!

  1. Spago is one of our favorites on Maui- great seafood . Skip Merryman's for a special occasion--it's OK but not great. Never tried Banyan Tree. Lahaina Grill is also good but $40 meatballs (very good) might be a little expensive--we prefer the outside seating at Gerards--closer than spago to you. If you have time lunch at Haliimaile General Store is worth the trip.

    1. Waterfront Restaurant in Maalaea

      (....and it's ON Maui)

      1. I second Haliimaile General Store. Not close to the ocean but excellent in every respect.

I thought the tasting menu at Spago to be rather overly sweet and 1-flavored. Merriman's in Kapalua would be my recommendation for a special occasion aside from Mama's. Enjoy!

Never eaten at Spago but I agree about Merriman's. I had a nearly perfect meal there last May and the setting is wonderful.

        2. I would recommend the Plantation House in Kapalua. My wife and I ate there last week and their fish is to die for. They do 5 or 6 preparations of at least 2 kinds of fresh fish nightly. We had a Mediterranean preparation of Ono and it was flawless. I would recommend a 6 pm reservation so you can see the sunset since the restaurant is on a hill overlooking the ocean.

          1. No view but Gerard's and Lahaina Grill are top-notch special occasion places.

If you like sushi, you must go to Sansei. They have some unique rolls. There is one in Kaanapali and also a location in Kihei. For a quick lunch you might consider Da Kitchen for plate lunches. It is also in Kehei located in the Rainbow Mall.

You know, I forgot to mention Gerard's. Very nice, and a lovely porch, though obviously no "ocean view." Nice French wine list too, and at fair prices for "paradise."

We met James McDonald, the executive chef at I`o there, and were impressed, when we dined with him, on our next visit.

                Mahalo for jogging my memory.

              2. My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at David Paul's Island Grill. They have a tasting menu which was very reasonable. Right on front street so you get the ocean view if you get a table outside.

We were horribly disappointed with the new David Paul restaurant. They had been open for about six months, but nothing seemed to be clicking from the FOH to the kitchen. We had been fans and followers for years previously, but only hope that things change for the better. From you response, maybe they have, and we were just too early?

                2. Probably too late to help, but here are my recs.

                  Mama's at all costs
                  Bev Gannon's Hali`imaile General Store
Merriman's Kaplua (always good for me)
                  I`o (Lahaina)
Banyan Tree (they did a refurbishment, since we last dined there)
Lahaina Grill (not the newer David Paul restaurant)

Any/all could be "special occasion" in my book.

                  Enjoy and aloha,

                  Hunt
