Banquet-style Chinese in or near Orlando

richw Jan 24, 2011 04:32 PM

I'm looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Orlando area. Specifically, I'd like to find the sort of place a Chinese family would hold an event for a banquet-style feast with a private room.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone. @YosemiteSam - they want Chinese food. Do you all know anything about Ming Court? Thoughts?

Ming Court would be a mistake. It is designed for tourists. Ming Bistro, however, is very good for Hong Kong-style Chinese food plus dim sum. That is just north of 50/Colonial off Mills, on Woodward. I'd suspect you could probably rent that place out at night for a banquet, as the simple space has festive chandeliers. Most of the customers are Chinese-American and many items are only posted in Chinese characters, so it might fit your needs.

What she said - Ming downtown is a good to great option, Ming Court on I-Drive is a no - it's confusing even to us locals

There is a FABULOUS Chinese restaurant on Turkey Lake Road in Orlando! It is off the beaten path and I cannot remember the name. It was recommended to us by a concierge at one of the hotels. It is in a small shopping center and you would most likely go right by if you weren't looking for it. The gem of it is that the owners are CHINESE and the menu is traditional. Yes you could get Chow Mein if you asked but it isn't on the menu. In fact the only English on the menu is the translations under the Chinese Characters. Only the owner spoke English. We simply told her how we came to be there and then told her how many dishes we wanted and how much we wanted to spend. Seriously, the only other time I ever had Chinese food like that was in a little hole in the wall in Chinatown in NYC (and that place also only had Chinese menus!) Google search around and see if you can find it. If I were going to be in Orlando, I would make sure I ate there at least once. Not to be missed!

I think we're talking about the same place :) - Turkey Lake Road is long - was it on the corner with Conroy-Windermere? That's the Magic Wok - if you look at their website it has a full Chinese version of the menu

If you have visitors from China then their expectation of "Chinese" food is likely very different from what we eat here in America, and ESPECIALLY in Orlando. A place I find that has an authentic menu and ingredients is Magic Wok on the corner of Turkey Lake Road and Conroy-Windermere Road. But I must emphasize this place is tiny with no ambience at all. They also have a basic Americanized menu, but if you look closely they specialize in Shanghai-region food with lots of interesting items (eels anyone?) Try calling them and see if they can arrange a more authentic menu for you if you can commit to a number of heads. http://magicwokorlando.com/default.aspx

That said, are you sure your visitors will be coming all the way from China only to be served Chinese food? To me it's like going to Asia and getting a hamburger. Why not take them somewhere authentically American but still impressive? I know Luma on Park has a BEAUTIFUL private room and a very delicious local menu - check it out to see if it may meet your needs better.

          Hi Rich,

I think Lam's Garden might be your best bet for banquet style chinese. They even have the dragon and phoenix and lucky marriage symbol on the back. Not sure if they have a private room though, maybe ask?

Thanks for the quick reply. One addendum to the question, if you don't mind. I'll be hosting a group of visitors from China. While I would like a private room, top notch food is even more important. Would that change your recommendation?
