Valentines Day is Coming...where are you eating?

jboeke Jan 24, 2011 08:08 AM

I tried this for New Years and no one really responded, so I'm giving it another go. What are the locals doing for Valentine's Day? We have a young child so I booked Canoe on 2/13 because it's near my in-laws house and they will do the babysitting. Also because we have a standing rule not to try new restaurants on holidays after too many disappointments, and we know what to expect at Canoe. I was debating trying Local Three since OpenTable said they'd have a 3-course for $45 deal and it's in the same part of town, but this would violate the previously mentioned "no new" rule.

We did Miller Union last year and had a very good meal. Valentine's Day is to dining as New Year's Eve is to drinking (amateur night). Have had plenty of bad meals in theoretically good restaurants that were jamming people in for the occasion. Usually, we just stick to BBQ.

The other really memorable VD meal was at Sotto Sotto right after they opened. Risotto with rose petals- amazing.

We too are going to Canoe! I love that place! We did go to Rathbun's last year and it was awesome. As far as trying something new it would totally be worth it. Also, I am passing along my secret weapon for celebrating Sunday (as that is what we are doing as well): Maud Baker Flowers is doing free delivery on Sunday AND a free box of chocolates AND an extra 6 roses free. I guess they are getting killed for deliveries on Monday.

My beloved will be working tonight, so we celebrated on Saturday (2/12). We had an amazing meal at Dogwood. Every bite was delicious. I especially recommend the pork Portherhouse. One teensy complaint: the service was a bit rushed, and the restaurant was only about 75% full, so there seemed to be no need for it.

We had a reasonably priced Valentine's Day dinner at Manhattan Pizza, where our son has recently begun working. We went there to see him in his new work environment. What amazed me was how much I enjoyed my pizza. We ordered the Chicken Club pizza - which is the current monthly special. The crust was light, soft, fresh - better than any I have had in a very long time. The chicken, ham, bacon, cheese, and lettuce was much tastier than I could have ever dreamed. Familiar flavors and tastes in a pizza setting. What a concept!
