This is a great hidden gem off the beaten track. It is a few blocks away from 20th ave. shopping area. The cheesecakes are terrific. They put toppings on to order-strawberry, pineapple, etc. They also have great pastries. I bought the rainbow bar. It is about 1 foot long with 3 sides covered in chocolate. When you slice it up, it has the green, yellow and red sections. It was very moist and wonderful. I also heard the pies are great. those are for next time. Prices much less than Junior's or Cascon. Only open Thurs., Fri.,Sat, and Sun. I also got garlic bread with whole slices of garlic in bread , just out of oven.
The cheesecake is better than most of the 'best' around the city, actually. It is hard for me to say it is the best or exactly where it ranks but it is way up there and possibly tops.
The other goods did not look like anything special but that is partly due to the types of goods they are.
We've been going there since Opening Day (right after we pick up our bacon at Empire Meats, a few blocks away). The place is KILLER. The rainbow bars are Beyond Real as are the chocolate mousse bars when they have them. Great owner. Reasonable prices. I've never thought of it as a "hidden gem" as one routinely has to wait 20 minutes just to get INSIDE the tiny place!
I like La Cheesecake's chessecakes more. Creamier. Cascon's are right up there though.
Empire has been owned by the same family for decades and decades and decades ( too lazy to open another window and look it up). Their bacon is nitrate free and hand cut. You can get nice , thick slabs. Truly awesome. In the summer we buy their foot long nitrate free hotdogs. They order all their casings from Europe, and sometimes when their are issues with the mail, run out. Then you just have to wait :( I suggest you order them in advance like we do.
When you are there, across the street from Cascarino's ia humble little Dominican place called Mangu Cafe/Grill? Their Mofungo is to die for!

Good italian cheesecake can be had at Lety's, in Jackson Heights who worked for Veniero's for years, and makes it as good as them....I didn't really care for Cascon--tried it out, and the place itself has such a downer vibe to it----
Still think the Vanilla Cheesecake from Miss Grimble (Bronx) is tops.
