Favorite bar at a restaurant to eat at?

b

Hey all,

What's your favorite bar of a restaurant to eat at? Have tried Babbo, David Burke Townhouse. Like the intimate feel of the bar and I don't need a reservation to get into the nicer restaurants (although I do have get there early).
Thoughts?

Thanks!

I went to Ma Peche around regular dinner time and sat at a table in the bar area. They offered the full dinner menu, not the bar menu, by default.

They also have a raw bar in the main dining room where you can sit and have dinner.

What are your priorities? People watching? Food? Drinks? A combination of the three?
Gramercy Tavern has a good bar with solid food. Bar Americain, not a Chowhound favorite, has a great bar with decent apps. The bar at Scarpetta wins points for food AND the amazing house-made chips. Otto's bar is a fine wine/app destination. I could go on...

I drink gimlets or martinis there. Deb likes their wine selection. We both love the chips.

Here's a long thread with a ton of suggestions on places with good bar dining:
            http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/759698

In terms of cocktails, these restaurants have serious cocktail programs in line with the whole craft cocktail movement & some even have bartenders that have worked at places like PDT, etc

Lots of great options here. I'd add Maialino to the mix. Excellent small plates, and they serve the full menu there if you ask for it. I even asked them once for a spaghetti agli olio, which is not on their menu, and they did it happily.

The bar at Keens, for the most part, is way too packed for eating. The Pub Room on the other side of the wall is better for dining.

Craftbar is actually a separate building from Craft, but they have a great cocktail menu and some great small plates that you can definitely have a nice meal from.

Hearth- sit right across from the kitchen, not the bar. They also have great wine pairings. Also, on some nights you can actually see and chat with Marco Canora.
A Voce- the one inside Time Warner. Great drinks and an overall good menu.
B Bar- on the UES. I like to get a good Belgian beer and eat the mussels and fries. Remy is the head barman (bald, tall, you can't miss him) and he will tell you all about the menu and the beers.

For food and especially drinks, #1 hands down is WD-50. The cocktail menu is just as creative as the food. And the food sure ain't bad. The two main bartenders - Jafrul and Tona - are great, and will lead you down interesting paths, drink-wise, if you put your fate in their hands.

My #2, in general, would be Gramercy Tavern - solid bar menu, also good cocktails. Similar to that is the Colicchio & Sons Tap Room.

Momofuku Ssam Bar is right up there, certainly. Drinks are top-notch, from the PDT crew.

A few others coming to mind:

The front area of GT is the Tavern Room -- it contains both free standing tables and a bar that you can dine at. It does not take reservations. The back area is the formal dining room, which takes reservations.

There are also different menus in the tavern room vs. dining room - keep in mind, in case you're basing your decision on the wrong menu.

6PM on a Friday will likely be a mob scene. You might get lucky, but you'll be right in the middle of the after-work crunch. Be prepared to wait a bit, depending how many of you there are.
