Unable to access thread on Home Cooking board

I've been unable to access a thread on the Home Cooking Board at all today. It's called

Cookbooks you shouldn't have purchased...which books just didn't work for you? http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/734620

Any ideas as to what's going on? I can see others have been posting, so it's not entirely down.

Thanks!

Are you sure the thread you're trying to access isn't called ASK SUSHI MAN? :)

Chances are, you are having problems because your computer can't handle a really large topic, not because there's anything wrong at the Chowhound end. When I had my previous (old) computer, I used to have a problem when I tried to access threads with a lot of posts. Ever since I upgraded to a new computer - not a fancy one, just a fairly basic desktop - I haven't had any problems at all. And I have no problems accessing the one you're asking about, with its 516 posts.

Thanks for the reply. As I said in my OP I was trying to access the home cooking board on a cookbook thread. I'm also having trouble with the thread "what's one thing you've learned that changed your cooking" and others. I've cleared my cache and use a MacBook air with an excellent connection. Others periodically post here with the same problem. It seems to me that moderators could meliorate the problem (by splitting threads) but aren't interested in doing that for some reason.

We don't have the ability to split threads into multiple pages, sorry. That's not supported by this software, and probably won't be, because there's not really a logical way to do it, since our discussions are threaded, not flat, as discussions with multi-page threads are. The only thing we can do is split a single sub-thread out of a larger post, and that would rarely do much to bring the overall size of these large threads down.

We hate to hear that this has been so difficult for you, but there's really nothing we can do to fix it.

One shouldn't need to buy a new computer to access a website. So, while this isn;t going to be a problem that can be fixed for some, it is hardly a user problem.

Very long threads sometimes won't load properly for some people. Unfortunately there's not anything we or you can do about it. Trying again will sometimes work and sometimes not.

My friends and I have this problem all the time with large threads. I wish you could tell us more, technically speaking, about what the problem is, because I don't typically have this problem on other sites. In addition, if you know this is a problem, surely a work around can be found (splitting a board with many replies before - or at least when - access becomes a problem). It's precisely those threads with a lot of responses that people want to read here, so it's very frustrating to be unable to access them.

I don't know if you tried clearing your browser cache or not? I just tried loading that thread and it loaded within a couple of seconds. This is on an old PC (with the home edition of Windows XP) laptop running Firefox. Have you looked into using one of the free cleaner programs? I use CCleaner - www.ccleaner.com (I use the File Hippo site to download it) and it does a great job of clearing cookies and the browser and after running it (it takes a couple of minutes) my computer is able to load threads of any size quickly.

Have you cleared your browser cache lately? If you are on a pc and haven't done so that would one place I'd start.
