Help Choosing A Steakhouse

Hi,

I am planning a small party (about 10 people) for my father's 70th birthday in a couple of months. His only request is that we go to a restaurant where he will be able to hear everyone, so either a quiet restaurant or one with a private or semi-private area for the table. I have been thinking about having the dinner at a steakhouse because they serve his favorite foods, but I don't have a ton of experience eating at them. I know Sparks and Uncle Jack's have private rooms, but I haven't tried either of those. Can anyone recommend one over the other or any other restaurant in Manhattan that would fit the bill?

Thanks so much for your help!

I had dinner at Keen's a few nights ago, and it was flawless. Service, ambience and food: every element was perfect. They serve some of the best french fries in the city, an exemplary NY strip, a great porterhouse, fine soups and salads, and a perfect grilled sole. Even the desserts are delicious and well-presented. Five straight perfect dinners at Keen's for me and my family.

My first dinner last week at Keens was also perfect - food, service, ambiance. The whole package.

Ben and Jacks IMO is as good as Lugers!
They have 2 locations one on 5th ave and the other on 44th St.
Both have private rooms but I would rec 5th ave location as the private rooms are nicer and probably more quiet.

I bet I had a worse one at Uncle Jack's. The best place in Manhattan is Wolfgang's (there are two of them). Call to ask about private rooms.

              There are 3 Wolfgang's now...Greenwich St, East 54th(newest), & Park Ave(original).

Keens and Old Homestead are incredible and have private rooms. Quality Meats is another great recommendation.

Strip House is amazing but it may be more difficult to accomodate party of 10. BLT Prime is also great, but again not sure about the private room. Avoid Sparks- they do not have bone-in steaks.

          I believe Wolfgang's has a private room.

Forget about bone-in, they don't even have dry-aged steaks. Criminal at those prices.

Beautiful steaks at the Old Homestead! Go for just the steak--their sides and apps are all mediocre.

I actually think they do great apps and sides as well as wonderful steak. Their shrimp are tremendous and the kobe bacon is unbelievable.

For sides I think their steak fries are some of the best around. The creamed spinac is also traditional and an exemplary version. Truffled macand cheese is terrific as well. The only area they don't truly impress for me is dessert. Just nothing that stands out.

i respectfully disagree about the old homestead. they undercooked my medium rare prime rib...it was frozen in the center.

the place is meant to get your money as quickly as possible for crap steak.

We did a dinner for 10 at Quality Meats which was great. Not a private room, but a nice round table out of the way.

Keens has a number of private rooms upstairs. The Lillie Langtry Room might work for your group.

Definitely Keen's, not only can you hear everyone, the food is great, and they have cool history there. You can maybe get the Lincoln room

agreed: definitely Keens...a wonderful place for a celebration...in addition to the steak, the prime rib, the mutton chop, and oysters have always been very yummy when i've been there...

Strip House has large round tables. Both the food and acoustics are superior to BLT Prime.

I'd recommend BLT Prime, I don't know if they have a private room, but they have an upstairs seating area that is a little bit smaller and away from the downstairs crowd. The steaks are very good and they also have other menu items that are also very good.

I don't know if they have a small private space that would work for you ,but I took my mom to BLT prime for her 65th borthday a couple of weeks ago and the food and service was amazing. Steak was better then Peter Lugar.
