Cozy tavern near Washington, DC?
My boyfriend really likes cozy tavern-like establishments, and I'm trying to find some in the DC area that would be right up his alley. We liked the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg and McGarvey's in Annapolis for both their food and atmosphere. Obviously, we're not opposed to a little bit of a drive. Any ideas for similar places, preferably off the beaten path and perfect for a cold January night?

Columbia Firehouse in Old Town is extremely similar to the ambiance of McGarvey's.
But I think the Tabard Inn would fit the bill perfectly.

Thank you for all the lovely recommendations! Tabard Inn is a sure bet. We've gone to Columbia Firehouse and were sorely disappointed by the food. I'm definitely intrigued by Bistro D'Oc. Been to Martin's and liked it. Has anyone been to the Angler's Inn in Maryland? Anything a little further out?

You could add Eat Bar in Arlington, I think it kind of has a tavern vibe. The ambiance may not be perfect, but I also think you would like Liberty Tavern.
Birch and Barley may be a modern take on what you are looking for...
How far out are you looking for? The bar at Trummer's on Main would totally fit the bill and the upstairs is lovely.

you might like the tabbard inn - the area just before the restaurant (the anteroom?) is very cozy.

Tabard is wonderful, but not really anything like McGarvey's. It's very upscale, with a quiet dining room. I'd probably recommend Martin's in Georgetown. The food isn't the best you've ever had, but if you keep it simple, it's worth it for the history and the great atmosphere.
