Porchetta, Ippudo, Caracas, Keste, Shake Shack

looking for some picks on where to go during budget month! we had a big purchase this week and need to make up for it by cutting back on our dining expenses. i'm thinking of places like Porchetta, Ippudo, Caracas, Keste and Shake Shack, where we can get out under $40 (no drinks, obviously), but still look forward to trekking out.

oddball suggestions are most appreciated. there's little we don't eat.

  1. "We" meaning $40 for the two of you? I'll put my thinking cap on. Any neighborhood restrictions?

yeah, Ms. Coasts and neighborhood restrictions. Manhattan, preferably.

    2. How about Chinese? BaoHaus, Szechuan Gourmet, Xian Famous Foods, Great NY Noodletown, Noodle Village...

Don't forget also Gramercy Tavern's off menu lunch deal: sandwich and soup for $14.

I'm sure there's a ton of stuff in here:

      Gramercy Tavern
      42 E 20th St, New York, NY 10003

      Noodle Village
13 Mott St, New York, NY 10013

      Szechuan Gourmet
      21 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018

137 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002

      1. Risotteria, Taïm, Cafe Gitane, Cafe Habana, La Esquina (the counter portion)... Still thinking.

if you are a bit flexible, Northern Spy's sunday supper is $24 for 3-courses.

        Cafe Habana
229 Elizabeth St, New York, NY 10012

        La Esquina
106 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012

270 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014

        Cafe Gitane
113 Jane St, New York, NY 10014

        1. Artichoke. Most other pizza places.

Many bars have very reasonable happy hour menus that are interesting (but have the drawback of compelling you to spend money on beer, so that may not work for you). I was pleasantly surprised by the cheap food options at the Happy Hours for Jimmy's No. 43 and the Mermaid Inn's bar area.

I would probably cut out Ippudo as there are many other ramen places that deliver similar quality at much cheaper prices. Minca, etc.

          Mermaid Inn
          96 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003

          536 E 5th St, New York, NY 10009

          Jimmy's No. 43
          43 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003

          65 4th Ave, New York, NY 10003

          1. Porchetta has about 4 chairs to sit on, not a place to go to eat. Go to soba koh, Taisho(St. Marks) , inexpensive and lots of choices

            110 E 7th St, New York, NY 10009

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Ive been to the five places mentioned and was looking for some similar suggestions. Similar in the way that these places are "food destinations", but still quite cheap. To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with Porchetta. I'm glad to have tried it, but I won't be going back.

Been to Artichoke. Again, I didn't love it, but that's along the lines of what I'm looking for.

Appreciate all the suggestions so far. I'll be checking out the links that Kathryn provided, as well as some of the other suggestions. Someone mentioned Jimmy's...I love it there. Never ate, only drank, but I really like the space.
