Perilla and Shiso Leaves

When I was in Korea this past summer, most of my meals came with perilla (sesame) and shiso (giant mint) leaves, and I loved them. I have looked at United Noodle and many of the Nicollet Avenue Asian markets and cannot find them anywhere. Any leads?

  1. I'd try Kim's. They definitely sell it, but I am not sure if they have it now.

      If you can't find it fresh, there is a Korean dish that the perilla leave are marinated/pickled in soy/sesame/red pepper flake that can be found in a can (kkaennip). If the market has a kimchee bar, you might it there too. The leave will be dark from the soy sauce marinade. Good luck.

      Another option to go along with Korean bbq, it to buy green leaf lettuce and do a wrap with the lettuce/rice/ bbq and spicy red bean paste.

    2. It's sold at United Noodles. It's not always stocked (maybe because of the season..it does not grow in winter) so I suggest you call them. Try calling Sun Foods in Brooklyn Center and Pacific Oriental Foods in Brooklyn Park because they occasionally have them, too.

        Dragon Star in St. Paul has a pretty good selection of fresh herbs towards the back of the store on the left side. They had one leaf that looked like it came from the perilla family during the summer, but I think it was called tía tô. Good luck and let us know if you find any!

      2. I've bought them directly from Japanese restaurants in town. I think I've gotten a bunch from Sakura in St. Paul and Origami in Mpls.
