Has anyone been to the new Penguin yet? (Charlotte)

Yesterday's review in the Observer wasn't surprising, but I'd like to know if any of you have tried it yet.

  1. Nope, and don't plan to. It just keeps getting worse. From that stupid, huge, spintastic ad in Creative Loafing to the (TM) on everything, to the plastic logo cups you can take home, to the t-shirt special....he's doing everything he can to make it another bland chain restaurant, which is the opposite of what most sane people want. I don't understand how he can be so blind and naive about the dining public.

Prediction - in the future, they will yell "Welcome to the Bird(TM)!" when you walk in.

The comments on the Observer online are harsh! I live two hours away and planned on eating at The Penguin next week when I have to be in Charlotte for work. I had no idea they were changing it up. Sad I never got to see the "real" Penguin. A lot of posters online rec Pinky's or The Diamond instead. Any thoughts?

I can't offer any opinion on the food at the Penguin (TM). It might be the best new restaurant in Charlotte. I highly doubt it but I don't expect to find out.

The Diamond is not open yet. I hear decent things about Pinky's, but its always been crowded when I've thought about going there.

        Try South 21!

I can't find the link to an article on 1/19. Do you have it? The comments on the CO's site are crazy!

If I ever go and they say "Welcome to the Bird(TM)!" when I walk in, they will get the bird alright.

Luckily, Pinky's is right around the corner from school, so I'm set.

        3. we went by the Penguin tonight. very few cars in a parking lot that was once jammed. someone on the street had told us that no locals were going there. there was one sad couple dining in a restaurant that, at six o'clock of an evening, would once have been jammed. we walked around the corner to the rehabbed Diamond Restaurant, to find an interesting freshened-up space, a spacious fun menu, a good juke-box, an eclectic welcoming crowd, and excellent draft beer. Our waitperson told us he had formerly worked at The Penguin, as had many others working there. The vibe is the Penguin vibe, in a fun, not-too-fussy space that is only slightly less funky (if a tad brighter) than the Penguin of old. Forget about the Penguin. it's not coming back. Go to The Diamond and make some new memories.
