Will be in that area on a Sat. and have to eat somewhere so my vegan friend has options. He listed these, any thoughts? Style of food isn't as important as a fun place to catch up for a while and not being crazy crowded. Thanks.

there's Masa right across the street which people love but i think is just ok
there's Taix which is an old school french place which is really good
there's some great mexican in the area
did you look up The Oinkster?
Home is cool, but i like it more for brunch
gingergrass is classy vietnamese
there's a place called Local down that's tasty and quirky

  1. What about Elf Cafe? They take reservations...

ADD: I think you got auto linked to the wrong Masa. This link should be the right one.

It looks like Flore is now FOOD+LAB

          1. re: Joanie

Huh. It does look that way.
At any rate, pretty good vegetarian and vegan restaurant.

            1. re: cls

Looking at the Food+Lab website, it can't be the same. May have to drive by.

              1. re: cls

Place link for F+L (different address from Flore - so maybe not the same place)

                Food+Lab
3206 West Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90026

                1. re: Servorg

I think it's because Yahoo lists the address for Flore to be 3206 Sunset as well.

                  1. re: cls

I just called Flore and they are still Flore and they are at 3818 W Sunset (per the place link in the CH database).

      2. There is great restaurant a bit north on Glendale Blvd. called the Red Lion. They have fantastic roast beef sandwiches and many German specialties.

I actually went there for drinks last visit when we got sick of being at the Cha Cha. Fun spot.

What's the word on Taix? It looks kind of cool and old school, with good prices if the food is decent.
          Dusty's looked good too.

          1. re: Joanie

Taix is a fun old joint and the make some good homemade soups, but I've never had anything else there that was very exciting. Standard old school French-American.

          2. re: Rudeman

Red Lion is great. It's fun and has an outdoor Biergarten.
A great restaurant it is not. The happy hour buffet consists of warm Velveta and a choice of Ritz or Saltines for example.

BTW, I think their vegan option is pork sausage.

          3. I'd like to bump this thread since I'll be staying in the Echo Park area this weekend. I'm looking for a good gastropub type place, I'd love to make it over to Animal if I can, but my weekend is fairly planned out so I might not have time. Any places close that has good food, some interesting beers on tap, and would generally just a fun place to hang out? Also, I am a die-hard Eagles fan flying in from Philly, are there any good places where I'd be able to nurse a hangover and watch football on Sunday? I saw some reviews about a place called Philly West, but to be honest, I can get awesome sandwiches any day of the week at home. I'd rather go to a place with good beer and food as opposed to anywhere generic like god-awful Buffalo Wild Wings or something like that. 10am football is rough, I don't know how you west coasters do it!

You might want to look into the downtown iteration of Big Wang's (they don't seem to have the link here) for your Sunday AM football. Good wings and reasonable bar food. Says they open at 11am but give them a call and double check - it's the first NFL Sunday so they might open up early. Some bars in EP have TV's but the odds your game are on would be slim and the odds they will be open at 10 in the morning are even slimmer.

10am football is both and art and a science but you may find it leads to an ultimately more relaxing Sunday when your six beers deep by 1pm.

Big Wangs downtown LA place link added (and website info corrected on N Cahuenga location and added to the others)
