Bethesda--late night?

Pearlie Jan 18, 2011 09:46 PM

Will be staying at the Bethesda Hyatt--probably won't get there till close to 11pm--is there any place nearby where I could get something good at that hour? And while my time there is programmed pretty tightly, if I do get away and go looking for something to eat at a more reasonable hour, any strong recommendations for that vicinity? Thanks so much!

There are some very good places on Cordell Ave. about 5-10 minutes walk from you via Old Georgetown Road. Mia's Pizza is among the best in the area. Fresh Grill does great burgers and other fare. Highly regarded also (though I haven't been yet) are Passage to India and Faryab (Afghan). Also in that vicinity is BGR: The Burger Joint, which does very good burgers and shakes.

Check the websites of these places for their hours.

But the OP asked for late night. Arriving at 11 p.m. means that by the time they check in and get into the room, it will be more like 11:30. You aren't helping by saying "check the websites" because the OP could check something like 120 websites for Bethesda restaurants - that's why they asked here. To avoid that pain.

I've lived here 25 years. Bethesda is dead at night. Mia's closes at 10:30 on Friday/Saturday; 9:30 weekdays, 9 Sunday. BGR (very slow website, and good lord, the close-up photo of the burger makes you want to run in the other direction) at 9 Sun-Thurs, 10 Friday/Saturday. Fresh Grill closes at 8 Tues-Thurs, at 9 Fri-Sat, and at 7 on Sunday.

Then there are the websites that can't be bothered to tell you. Passage to India says "dinner from 5:30."

Faryab appears not to have a website.

This is a town full of very, very important people who work, work, work all the time, except when they are chauffering their kids around town. They aren't going out to eat at 11ish, weeknight or weekend.

      Tastee Diner is open 24/7.

I would guess that bars that serve food might be the best option, though kitchens often close before the bars. And there aren't that many bars in Bethesda. Black's Bar and Kitchen (a top restaurant) has a late night bar menu until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

The OP said, "... if I do get away and go looking for something to eat at a more reasonable hour, any strong recommendations for that vicinity?" I was addressing that portion of the question.

When I said "check the websites of these places for their hours", by "these places" I was referring to the places I mentioned in my post. There weren't many, so I didn't consider that burdensome. Sorry for the confusion.

Fair enough. I read it differently. I thought the OP meant that this was going to be a problem every night, because this "if I get away and manage to eat at a more reasonable hour...." to me meant that OP is at some crazy meeting that will run late each day and that has no time allotted for dinner. Well, whatever OP meant, Bethesda is small enough that you can walk no more than 15 minutes from the Hyatt and get to almost every Bethesda restaurant. Given the large number of restaurants in Bethesda, and the paucity of great restaurants in Bethesda, the only way to really help OP is for OP to give us a hint about what he/she likes/hates.

If it's Thursday, Friday or Saturday, I'd hop over to Jaleo, which closes at midnight those days. Otherwise, there's nothing noteworthy nearby.

not sure what time they close but in your hotel is Morton's and The Daily Grill and across the street is Ruth's Chris. They have bars so they may be open later

Ugh, you have just hit upon one of my major pet peeves about the area. We live in Bethesda and honestly have trouble getting dinner after 9:00, especially during the week, much less 11:00. For example, Taylor Gourmet used to be open until 10:00, then quietly scaled back to 9:00. I complained on their Facebook site, and was told they weren't making any money between 9 and 10.

So you can count on only finding fast food/casual dining at that hour. To wit:
In addition to Tastee Diner, which was mentioned above, Steak & Egg Kitchen down the street from Bethesda is open 24/7. Booeymonger in Friendship Heights is open until midnight during the week, 1am on weekends. Some of the bars in the Bethesda triangle are open later, like Caddies on Cordell (12:30am/1:30am), Rock Bottom (1am/2am) possibly RiRa,
