Oval Room for RW...anyone been?

I have a reservation for tomorrow night at Oval Room. An interesting article about the value of RW has me thinking twice.

has anyone been this year and if so how was it?

I was at Oval Room tonight and thought the meal was wonderful. The menu was specifically for Restaurant Week with five choices in each category. I started with a warm goat cheese and potato pave with poached cherries and cracked peppers. Complex flavors which worked well together. My entree was a crispy skate with red curry sauce. Delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly. Dessert was a citrus vanilla cheesecake with a graham cracker ice cream. Also quite good. My only complaint is that the bread seemed stale. But if the intention is to get me to go back for more, it worked. I'll be back!

I went this past summer for lunch and was pretty underwhelmed. I've heard great things about the Oval Room and I know it got a little attention with a Top Chef contestant last season so we chose it for lunch. It was one of those places that I've always heard about but always forget to go.

Nothing was wrong with the meal....it was just boring. And the steak I ordered was a little overcooked. In general I think you can do better. Bistro Bis, Art and Soul, PS7, and DC Coast all do Restaurant Week very well in my experience.

Well, I will strongly disagree. Oval Room is one of the most underrated places in the city, and Chef Conte is a gem.

The lunch I had there for RW last year was one of the best RW meals I've ever had. Lots of choices, and I found the menu to be quite inventive.

That said, RW value at most places in DC is somewhat overrated. If places like Oval Room average $12 for an appetizer, and $28 for an entree, you're essentially saving $5 and getting a free dessert. Not to knock any of the places that Elyssa mentions, who all do RW well (I can't speak for Art & Soul, but the rest have done well for me in the past), but all of them are in this price range.
