  1. this is an awfully broad request. budget? how many people? do you want a place that takes reservations? are you looking for more breakfast-y foods, or lunch options like salad as well? Italian? French? American? when you say "special," is it for a particular occasion/celebration?

kathryn is the resident NYC brunch expert, you might want to check out some of her recommendations in the past year:

    1. Sorry that I wasn't more specific. We will be 4 people celebrating a friend's 65 th birthday...reservations required...price is not a concern...something elegant but not snobbish...interesting food with brunch and lunch items...a place that would be considered special as opposed to just a regular neighborhood brunch place.

        ah, that's much better :)

based on those details, i imagine many Hounds will chime in to suggest Eleven Madison Park.

EMP doesn't serve brunch and they are closed Sundays.

is that no-brunch thing new? i could swear i've seen you all discuss it several times here...or maybe that was just for holidays?

              1. re: kathryn

okay, at least i wasn't imagining things. i KNEW i had at least read something about granola! but this is just another illustration of why *you* are the expert :)

A jar of granola is the take-home gift diners currently receive. We did brunch at EMP countless time, and I don't recall if there was granola on the menu. But, then, we always ate from the lunch side of the menu, never from the breakfast side.

Cafe Boulud is one of our favorites and is, in my opinion, the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. While we've been there countless times for lunch and dinner -- always a total delight! -- we've only been there for brunch once. But that was several years ago, and the menu now is quite different. Nevertheless, Chef Gavin Kaysen is an extremely talented chef, so I'm sure the dishes on the current brunch menu are wonderful. Service is cordial and polished, and the decor is elegant. Of course, they accept reservations.

          2. Aquavit has an excellent smorgasbord Sunday brunch. It is somewhat expensive, but it is all you care to eat and the quality is very high.

            1. How about the Water Club - it's got a great view.

              1. If you want truly SPECIAL, why not Per Se? :-)

The o.p. wants both breakfast and lunch dishes, and per se's menu does not include breakfast items. But if they are willing to forgo them, then per se is an excellent suggestion.

Per Se for Sunday lunch has no equal.

edited to add: the winter views out to Central Park South are pretty special.
