One of my favorite dishes ever, anywhere.

I had the zarandeado filets at MG and was underwhelmed. Truly not a memorable dish. Is there that much difference between the whole fish and filet treatments? Kind of ended up wishing I'd had a coctale instead :-(

            1. re: DiningDiva

First time there I ordered the filets and cursed kare_raisu ;-). It was incredibly dry, inedible almost. Then I ordered the whole fish. WOW!

And DD, always start with a coctale. And a cocktail. ;-)

And the clams - cuchili? - baked in n a poblano cream sauce... wonderful.

Thanks, I'll have to try it again, this time with a whole fish. What size fish do they use, I didn't order it whole because I didn't want to have to deal with a bigger portion than I wanted.

Love poblano cream sauce on almost everything :-)

I've orederd it with whole 2 lb. Cabrillo and 2 lb. Sardina both were excellent, but I favored the sardina best. A great entree for 2 with a few cold ones.

yes and yes my two favorite things there!

you can get a 1 1/2 lb fish which yields maybe half of that in meat which I can manage. They ask you what size fish you want dd

                  1. re: kare_raisu

Cstr, KR thanks for the skinny on the whole fish. Looks like I ordered zarandeado the wrong way :-). 1 1/2# is probably about right. I managed to demolish a snapper in Guadalajara about that size with no problem, so there is hope :-)

        2. Try Tropical Star near Balboa Ave / Mt Altifan in Clairemont. My wife has eaten the whole grilled fish from them many times.

are you sure it's roasted? Usually Cantonese steam their fish. The exception is the crispy flounder with sauteed flounder fillets and snow peas/carrots/veggies dish.

            2. Cucina Urbana or kitchen 1540 both do a whole roasted fish.
