Looking for good, simple Chinese in NoVA/MD

All -

I'm looking to head out tonight for a date w/ the wife and we've a hankering for good Chinese. I've plenty of options in NoVA where we live but would like to branch out to Maryland. What's been good lately and worth of the trip across the river? We'll stay local in the Commonwealth too if that's our best bet. I'll also search for past recent threads on the topic but thought to get straight to the point with a new post.

My thanks -

  1. What do you consider "good" Chinese? I'm going with my hunch and guess Cantonese. You have at least 5 pretty good ones right there in the Seven Corners area, but I would go with Peking Gourmet in Culmore. You'll need a reservation, probably. The Peking Duck is the best around.

    1. How far out are you willing to go? Most of the Cantonese places in NoVA or Montgomery County are okay, and will fill the need if the urge arises. The Sichuanese food in this area is pretty good and you have the usual recommendations for Hong Kong Palace or Joe's Noodle. But I would say that for a really good experience, Grace Garden rises above the rest. It's worth a drive to Odenton, MD if you really want to know what good Chinese food is.

      1. Funny, I was just looking for a good Chinese place in NOVA. In MoCo, you can go to Hollywood East in the Wheaton Westfield Mall, Joe's Noode House on Rockville Pike, AJ's also on the Pike, Silver Fountain in Aspen Hill (on Connecticut before it intersects wtih Georgia), Oriental East in downtown Silver Spring, and Good Fortune on University Ave in Wheaton. The Tysons Buffet off Randolph Rd close to Rockville Pike is not bad, as is the Fortune Star or something also off the Pike, but I can't recall the road. Generally speaking, I've always thought MD had better Chinese food than NOVA, but NOVA has better Vietnamese.
