Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx

Food near FedEx office, 20th and 3rd in Brooklyn?

FedEx tried three times, all unsuccessful, to deliver a package to me this week. That means I tomorrow I need to go to their office at 20th St. and 3rd Ave (Brooklyn) to pick it up. Can anyone suggest a good place to eat in that area? I'll be getting off at the Prospect/5th Ave. subway station. If I could have a new dining experience, that would make the trip much more worthwhile. Any help much appreciated!

  1. There are a few places, relatively new on 5th Ave, heading towards 20th Street, I haven't tried. So no recommendations, unfortunately. Otherwise, Jubilat, on 5th Ave between 17th & Prospect Ave is a really good Polish deli. Otherwise, may have to trek to 30th Street and 3rd Ave for places like Spanish Halal restaurants and so on. If you're willing to head out to the south/east corner of 45th & 3rd Ave, there's a terrific Dominican place that serves very tasty pig feet and empinadas. Once again, I forget the name, but it's the only one on that corner.

Correction: Not emapenadas, but pastelles. I had their beef pastelle and it was delicious. I do believe, however, that they make empenadas as well.

    2. Thanks for the feedback, BMD. I ended up going after breakfast yesterday, deciding this errand wasn't going to turn into a culinary adventure. I did go by the Breukelen (not sure about the spelling) distillery and took a look in the window. Not a lot to see, but it's a novelty for the neighborhood, and it looks like a well-put-together facility.

      1. Next time, Toby's Public House on 6th Ave and 20th for pizza (has been written up here). Jubilat recommended above is well worth a visit if you like the Wide (Polish) World of Pork Products, but it doesn't have tables. Milan's, a Czech restaurant on 5th and 22nd is neat for certain specialities. And Lopez Bakery (now "Boulangerie Lopez") has excellent Mexican pan dulce, cafe con leche and v. good tamales, as well as a full range of NY cafe type offerings.

          I 2nd Milan.

Also in that area are Korzo for very good Central European food and an excellent burger, and Luigi's for a classic Brooklyn street slice.

        2. Excellent falafel and lentil soup at deli on the corner of 20th and 4th. The felafel sandwiches include pickled vegetables.

I saw that place - are there any other offerings?

Some folks on other sites have talked up the burgers and sandwiches: chicken or turkey and cheese steaks. (See links from the Chow place page.)

I think they have kefta kebabs. Everything prepared with care and pride.

                    cool thanks much.

                2. re: squid kun

Has anybody ever tried the restaurant/cafe type arrangement inside the Al Noor meat market, which is located on 21st St (b/w 3rd & 4th Aves)? The only time I went there to get goat meat about 2/3 years back, they were serving hot food but, I didn't try it. Would love to get some feedback.
