Cool, hip places to eat in San Diego...on the cheap?

Help us find some good eats this weekend, but we can't break the bank...any ideas?

Sorry for the non-specifics.. La Jolla area, I'd say about under $20 each?

      2. Georges Ocean terrace right before sunset around 4:30pm..
        Crab Catcher for happy hour..
Clay's at the top of the Hotel LJ for happy hour
Alfonso's for Mex for nachos, marg's and lots of fun people watching
        Roppongi for happy hour
        Whisknladle happy hour

I heavily second the Whisk n Ladle Happy hour. Cured Swordfish. $3 Incredible. Share some suckling pig and bread. Not a bad $20 deal.

Rappongi gets expensive fast even at half price happy hour.
Alfonso's IMO is good for only one thing: Drinks and people watching.
            Crab catcher is always solid.

Sorry BChicka. They extended the happy hour to 9pm on weekends so we went back last Saturday night for an easy nosh in walking distance. Shrimp cocktail for "happy hour" price of (I think) $9 were 4, puny, overcooked wigglers. $7 for a tiny (and non protein adorned) caesar salad, $8 HH price Merlot was no more than three ounces. Full price pour of Glen Levit was tiny and a whopping $14, the most we have paid anywhere in the US. I haven't dined there in years, and won't give it another shot in the same number. Really disappointing.

                Where foodiechicka?
That HH sounds horrid..and bloody expensive!

I totally trust your judgement chicka and I haven't been in a couple of years and the crab bisque, mussels, calamari and chowder were quite good and that's a real bummer since the view is great.
No more Crab Catcher req's from me until its approved by FC and where do they get off charging $14 for a Glenlivet...it's not like your at the Campbell Apartment in Grand Central..

I concur -- I went to the happy hour at Crab Catcher only once -- it was absolutely horrid.

                  1. re: foodiechick

Wow, they definitely changed that up. Sorry to hear that, I will be editing my thoughts for sure! Thanks for the heads up. Years ago, I found plenty of good deals on happy hour. I guess I need to go again or trust your input guys. Thanks again.

              2. Try Prep Kitchen, owned by the same people at Whisknladle - on Fay near the Vons. If you're willing to leave LJ, you might like Starlite - just a few minutes south on 5 - take the Sassafras exit and turn right on India. El Pescador and Burger Lounge are also pretty good and inexpensive.

I had a horrible experience at that Prep Kitchen. Ordered some beef dish that was first completely raw. Sent it back and then they made it completely overcooked and then they didn't remake the garnish so it was all cold.

The waitress admitted privately that you should really only order sandwiches and salads there, which totally limits the choice.

                2. I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but when I think of cool, hip and cheap, La Jolla is the last place that comes to mind. Get thee to North Park!
