I have a friend who goes gaga oo lala over truffles. I was wondering if you guys knew some nice (special occasion) places that have good truffle dishes. I would like to keep a max at 100pp after tax and tip (no drinks).

At Recette, you can add freshly shaved white truffle to anything. You pay for it by the oz ($25 / oz) and can add as much or as little as you like.

Ouest serves a delicious Truffled Omelet Souflée (appetizer). Can't speak for their Porcini Crusted Tuna with truffled mushroom broth, since I've never had it, but it's on the menu just the same.

Are you talking about truffle-crazy dishes - i.e. a plate of pasta with a crapload of truffles shaved on it? Or dishes which incorporate truffles in an elegant balance in a greater whole?

For the former, buy a truffle, some good pasta, and a chunk of Vacca Rossa parmesan at Buon Italia in Chelsea Market. Cook the pasta nice and al dente, toss with some butter, and shave those truffles and parm all over it. It'll cost 25% of what you'd pay in a restaurant for nearly the exact same dish.

Last time I was ta Caffe Falai they were offering a pasta special with fresh white truffles - as I recall it was $40 or so. I'd call in advance though, as they're seasonal.

Or go to Del Posto and get the (again, seasonal - so if they have it) Fettucine with White Truffles. It's a $45 supplement to the $95 menu, if I remember right, but it's not like the rest of the meal won't be worth it.

At the flagship Falai restaurant, there's the Pici with wild boar ragu and black truffles - but it's more the "elegantly balanced" sort of dish. Also, there's the city's only black truffle dessert that I know of - raspberry souffle with black truffle gelato.

For more of the black variety, on Monday Jan 24th they're having the "AC/BT" dinner at Locanda Verde - three courses with black truffles, $49.99 - again, probably not dishes swimming in truffles, but more balanced. Don't know if tables are still available, though.

Babbo also has a few specials that are probably still available, if you can get a reservation - the duck egg ($80) or Pappardelle ($120) with white truffles, beef cheek ravioli with black truffles ($??) and a few others.

And finally, at Masa (or actually Bar Masa) there's a sea bream with white truffle ($48 for probably two bites) a mushroom / truffle fried rice ($54), the famous uni risotto w/ white truffles ($78) and a Wagyu steak with truffles ($secondmortgage)
