Lunch or dinner at Chinese Duck House in Reno

Had dinner recently, then lunch today with six friends at Chinese Duck house. All of us had very good lunches.

CDH is a no-frills Chinese food restaurant, with a huge menu and amazingly low prices. My lunch today was Szechwan Chicken, which came with an egg roll (one of the better ones I've had), hot and sour soup (I prefer it more sour, so asked for extra vinegar), and fried rice. All of this was $4.95. Same item is $2 higher for dinner and includes a couple more appetizer treats. By the way, unlimited hot tea is available for another $1.25.

Total cost for seven of us, one of whom had roast duck, was $56, including tax and tip - a real bargain.

If you like potstickers, these are pretty darn good, with six provided for $4.95.

The food here is not San Francisco quality, but it's very good Chinese food for a very reasonable price.

  1. I like the Duck House but the Hong Kong restaurant on Peckham near South Virginia Street has better duck. I think Hong Kong Restaurant might actually make their own ducks.

I'm not a duck aficionado, so I can't comment on the quality between the two restaurants. I think the potstickers are better at CDH than Hong Kong Diner, but in general the food quality is fairly comparable.

We went to CDH instead of Palais de Jade because of the seating possibilities at Palais - we had 7 people and one of them has MS and uses a walker, so sitting at open tables rather than booths is easier. If I was going strictly for food quality, and didn't have time to drive to Golden Dragon in Rockville, or all the way to SF, I'd probably go to Palais de Jade. I haven't found any place in Reno that has better Chinese food, though certainly there are many places that are cheaper.

Now that my MIL has passed away, I'm happy to say that I won't ever eat a PdJ. I've never had anything there that knocked my socks off.

The duck chow fun at Chinese Duck House is great. And I'm really glad to hear about HKD cause we drive past if all the time and keep meaning to check it out. Thanks.

    2. We had lunch here today. Got the duck chow fun again - we're SO predictable - and an order of har gow. I think someone mentioned on another thread that they thought CDH buys their har gow so I asked. She strongly stated that, no, they make them and their wontons. The wrappers certainly seem freshly made, nice and thin and silken. We must branch out though - so many things look good.
