Portumex in Richmond

escargot3 Jan 13, 2011 06:17 PM

This is a gem of a hole-in-the-wall.

Had 2 tacos for lunch yesterday: shrimp and al pastor.
Simply put: they were outstanding. And the house salsas are freshly made, and with great character.
The shrimp were plump and flavorful. Sauted, not grilled. The soups also looked particularly good, and it's nice to see a variety of soups being offered.

Yes, very good! Lunches at Portumex were definitely the highlight of work days spent years ago in Richmond.. I only get there once in a while now, but still love the pozole, conchas, al pastor burritos, garlic shrimp, and many other items,.

Thanks for update - haven't been in a few yrs.

Any updates on Jalisco (nr 22nd and MacDonald), El Tapatio (the truck/restaurant combo) or the truck in the lot (nr corner of 23rd and Barrett -- never found out the name of that truck)?

I noticed that truck on the lot near Barrett...but didn't stop since I was meeting someone at Portumex. Definitely had a certain appealing vibe.

Yeah, I haven't been there in a few yrs, always saw ppl ordering plates of 4 or 5 tacos. They just need more tables - a lot of ppl end up eating in/outside of their car

I was't too impressed with the 23rd Street taco trucks. They are fine and cheap and good for a local lunch.

            Thanks for the Portumex update.

I haven't tried it but the shrimp cocktail can be ordered warm. I've seen it at other tables and always meant to order it after reading a description of it in the Chronicle many years ago.

“A glass goblet arrives with a basket of soda crackers. In it, layers of freshly boiled shrimp, avocado, onion, cilantro and tomato are swimming in a subtle, slightly pink broth … a lovely strained stock of shrimp shells, onion, tomatoes, garlic and spices … Order it cold, like most do in Mexico, or ``tibio,'' which is halfway between hot and cold.

Here's some of the stuff I liked (and didn't) at Portumex

Is the churro stand still across the street?

It would be nice to get some updates on El Tapatio which has great goat stew (sometimes), mocajetes and ... despite the millions of micheladas (I exaggerate ... slightly) I've had in Guatemala ... had one of the most memorably great michaladas I've ever tried

Also chow-worthy on the street is Pepito's especially for the enchilada suiza, tortilla chips, and chile verde. Also look out for seasonal specials. They have a lovely patio in back ... however, at this point, after Antigua and the requisite drop-dead breathtaking patios, it's going to take a lot to impress me in the Bay Area.

Then there's always La Plazuela which has great authentic food but it took, even for me, a bit of nerve to walk into this restaaurant pool parlor.

Up near Grocery Outlet on 23rd, does anyone know if Martinez Market made it? The former owner of Del Palmer in El Cerrito opened this place just before I left.

And thanks for the tip re. the taco trucks...
