Khana Peena (Solano) Lunch Buffet. Bleh

Oh, "I told you so" crowd. I probably go 2x/year, when I'm really hungry, and don't want to wait for food. I know I'm out of there for under $10, and it is pretty harmless. Well, today was probably my first and last trip for 2011.

(1) No more included soda eff. 1/1/11. They don't tell you this, they just offer it to you (although I did notice afterward that the board outside had the free soda part taped over). There is a sign under the buffet cart, which you don't notice until after you order. So, effectively, the price has gone up about 13%. Ok, I can accept that.

(2) The food. The only meat was chicken. The only tandoori was chicken legs. There were 3 or 4 kinds of chicken. There used to be at least a lamb or something. The tikka masala was indescribably bad. The sauce had a paste-like consistency, and I couldn't figure out what it was, except maybe some sort of thickener (to make a bland tasting watery sauce thick). The papadum were soggy, and the rest of the dishes were just bleh and flat. Well, except the rice. The rice was good. So were the sauces, and the naan (brought fresh after you arrive) was alright.

From their menu:
Rice Dishes
All Rice Dishes are made with Indian Basmati Rice and served with Raita.
Plain Rice
Basmati rice boiled in kesar (saffron) water

I should have ordered a plate of rice.

  1. Agreed. I gave up on the buffet a year or more ago. They always had a lamb dish offerered.

    1. I wish you'd posted three hours ago, because I had a similarly disappointing lunch there today, complete with soda offer. I think they also used to have dahl, missing today. This was my first time back there after a few months ago when I bit into a pink, raw-inside tandoori chicken leg.

Correct, no buffet at Ajanta. I've been hitting them for lunch lately and it usually costs ~$15 with soda and tip.

      2. We call that place Kinda Blanda-- though it got my 11 y/o interested in eating Indian food--she likes the dal soup.

I am still wondering how that "tikka masala" sauce was made.
