Diet Boba Drinks

A couple of years ago I posted an inquiry as to various types of cold desserts and drinks that might be found in sugarless form. Nobody responded to the boba portion of the request, so I'm answering it myself. You can get drinks made with Splenda at the Cha For Tea location on Garfield and Main in Alhambra. They also indicated that one of their other locations makes drinks with Splenda and another artificial sweetener, possibly Equal. If there are any other sugarless boba parlors around I would appreciate hearing about them.

this is probably going to sound stupid, but aren't a majority of the boba drinks offered from powder mixes? wouldn't those mixes have sugar in them? i know few places go through many steps to make less "instant" but when you ask for certain flavors, they're gonna reach for those flavored syrups and additives...

Drinking a sugarless boba drink while eating boba is like ordering a diet soda with an order of chili cheese fries.

Actually, it would be more like ordering a root beer float with diet root beer.

As a type 1 diabetic I can tell you that a scoop of ice cream with diet root beer is much easier for my body to handle than a scoop of ice cream with sugared root beer. Two scoops and things get a little hairy. Three and it doesn't really matter anymore if the root beer has sugar or not :)

But seriously, one scoop of ice cream and diet root beer, along with a dose of insulin and a brisk 30 minute walk afterwards, and my blood sugar is fine. And with sugared root beer, a little more insulin along with the walk keeps me level. Portions are key.

P.S. I can't stand non-caloric sweeteners. Even stevia makes me gag.

Does that same protocol apply to Diet Boba drinks? Assuming you partake of such libations ... :-)

The thought sounds revolting, honestly. But the impact of having a sugar free liquid portion of boba drink would be gentler all around.... I would need less insulin and less exercise to offset the sugar.

So, while it seems absurd to the casual observer no order no sugar sugar, there really is a benefit (even for non-diabetics) of not taking in *that* much extra liquid sugar.

I can't stand those sweetened boba drinks.
I get unsweetened black tea and boba.

Boba is starch which becomes sugar in the body as stated above. On the other hand more and more places are more conscience about the amount of sugar they put in the drinks. A lot of places will ask for the sugar level now. However, as stated if you are indulging on the drink, mind as well go all in and not worry about it.

            Diet boba is an oxymoron.

Does the boba itself have sugar in it? When I chew on boba they taste sweet and not sweet from the drink.

The boba itself is made of starch (aka carbohydrate) and whether or not they contain extra sugar (I'm sure they do based on taste) once broken down in your GI tract, becomes a simple sugar. Getting the liquid portion sugarless is a bit pointless.

Unless, of course, you skip the boba.

Then it would just be a "Diet Drink". Might as well pop open a can of Diet Mr. Brown Coffee.
