Union Burger

There is one opening in Grimsby. Should I be looking forward to it?

  1. I've only had their fries at that location and they were too soft. Go to Memphis Fire down the street instead. I hear they have an amazing burger but have yet to try it.

Memphis in Winona - I recently tried their slider trio, which included a beef burger. Very decent. Would try full size next time but I'm always tempted by their other items like smoked meats!

    2. I see they're under the same umbrella as Crabby Joes. Which is okay. Nothing special.

      1. Bumping this thread to ask if any 'hounds have tried this chain?

No T.O. locations thus far, but I know they have opened a Mississauga location since this thread was last updated. They now have a new location in downtown Kitchener.

Not a fan of Crabby Joe's so I am wary...

        Any recent experiences/reviews?

I tried it. Meh. It reminded me a lot of South St., actually. It's kind of dry with a middling flavour, but I've had worse. If you find yourself near one and you're craving a burger it'll get the job done, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it.

No interest for me. Too many good options to waste time at bad ones.
In fact, for a burger the only chain I'll go to now is 5 Guys and only one I trust.

That sounds about right. I know Five Guys gets a lot of hate on this board (and they do smash the hell out of their burgers all through the cooking process, which makes them much less juicy than they should be, and which I really wish they wouldn't do), but they're the only big burger chain that I can think of in the GTA where the beef actually has something resembling a pleasant, beefy flavour.

              1. re: Michael N

Well, 5 guys is what it is. In fact, it's really 2 different places. One good, one bad. A bad one is just plain bad. But a good one produces a pretty damned good burger.

The one in Newmarket has a kid who I see work the fry vat. He's a savant. Really knows his way around a fryolator and produces some of the best fries you'll ever have.

Haven't seen him the last couple visits which worries me.

That's what I figured. I generally don't bother with the chains, but this is walking distance from my home, so I thought I'd ask. Also, we have a Works (meh), but NO Five Guys locally. Not much in the way of decent burgers here in Kitchener, although we do have FratBurger in Waterloo (fresh ground daily and will cook your burger RARE - just not my thing) and Little Louie's in Cambridge (Amazing... better than ANY char grilled I have eaten anywhere in ON - but NO weekends)
I was just hoping for something decent that I could walk to... oh well...

Some of the K-W restaurants known for good food might also have a good burger on the menu? I would maybe check out that barbecue place or see if Morty's still does a good one? (Mind you, the last time I ate a burger at Morty's was 10 years ago.)

                1. re: Food Tourist

not really... Morty's wings are fine. The BBQ place burgers are just ok in my experience.

Looks like I'll just have to get my burger fix weekdays in Cambridge.

                  1. re: kwfoodiewannabe

What about the "new" trendy dining rooms like Bauer Kitchen, etc.? Can you ask for well done at the Frat place?

                    1. re: Food Tourist

FT... Don't need well done, and Frat burger is an occasional option (short drive to waterloo) Bauer burger is not bad but $17.00. I'm looking for something a little more "everyday", I guess.

Davwud, I had no idea Burger's Priest was considering expansion beyond the GTA. That would be nice...

                2. re: kwfoodiewannabe

Be patient. I believe Burgers Priest will delivering salvation before too much longer.

If he spreads himself too thin, the burgers may suffer.

                    1. re: Food Tourist

Agreed. I'm watching pretty closely because, from what I understand, they well have 10 places across Canada by (I heard) the end of the year.
One thing that should help is they've struck a deal with Pitaland (I believe) for logistics.
Also, way back when they first opened I had a chat with Shant (the owner) and he was fully aware of the pitfalls of over expansion.

Aware and care are two different things. Sometimes ego can get in the way of vocation and mission. If he's got integrity (as he implies), he will do just fine.

                  2. re: kwfoodiewannabe

"something decent I could walk to" took 9 years in my neighbourhood. :)
