Need suggestions for casual (last minute!) 30th birthday - tribeca, soho.
Hello Chowhounds,
My husband's 30th birthday is this weekend and friends have just decided, last minute, to drive up from DC to celebrate. I would Love some suggestions for a casual & inexpensive (we're all grad students and artists) dinner in the Soho/Tribeca/Chinatown area...somewhere that won't already be booked up for tomorrow night!
He's a scottish southern lad who loves comfort food, BBQ, Italian food, meat and potatoes, and a good Scotch/Whiskey - not into anything exotic (sadly!).
A friend suggested Locanda Verde, which looks good, I just thought I'd see what you foodies would suggest.
In terms of casual - we'd love somewhere relaxed/comfortable where we will be able to hear each other.
In terms of inexpensive - grad student friendly pricing. A price range of ~$15-25 or $30 on entrees would be perfect.
We are headed out to the Whiskey Tavern for some fun afterward if that gives a sense of our style:)
Thank you so much!

I hope you've already checked opentable.com to see what's still available. Check it for that part of town, let us know what looks open, and we'll tell you what we think of the places.
I did very much enjoy a light late dinner my brother and I had at Locanda Verde in October, so you can chalk up another "yes" for the place.

one of my favorite places nearby, is a sort of off the radar spot called grotto. it's a little subterranean italian place run by germans with great food and friendly atmosphere.
whiskey tavern is my go-to, neighborhood bar. i'll probably run into you guys saturday night...i'll be there for a birthday party too. remember to save room for late night tater tots!

Grotto's on the LES, DBGB is in the Bowery.
OP requested TriBeCa, SoHo, Chinatown.
walkercain, Locanda Verde is not on opentable.com. Also, if you're willing to go to the East side/FiDi Table Tales Cafe has a 3 course prix fixe for $28.50 and Grace's comfort food is very good:

It's another local, neighborhood place like Duane Park.

A neighborhood place:
Not sure if it's casual enough for you . . .
Not a fan of Locanda Verde or The Harrison (dark and clubby). Haven't tried Osteria Morini or Marc Forgione yet . . .

Locanda Verde is great. If you can't get a reservation, look into:
