Lighting in Local Chinese Restaurants
I'm pretty oblivious to things beyond food sometimes, but even I can't help but notice that lighting is quite bright in virtually every local Chinese restaurant I've been to. A Chinese friend theorizes that this is the result of arranged marriages and the lack of a dating culture in China for a thousand years. It's an intriguing theory, but I have no insight on this. Bueller? Anyone? I've been trying to think of a place with lower lighting. About the only one that comes to mind is Yujean Kang and even there the lighting is not that low. Any others?

Bamboo in Sherman Oaks is not brightly lighted nor is Kung Pao Bistro in Studio City.

We ask everyone to keep this thread on-topic for the L.A. board and please suggest local restaurants where the lighting is right.
The theory of how lighting is used in a restaurant is a discussion that belongs on our Not About Food board. If you'd like to pursue that angle of this question, please start a new discussion on that board.

Panda Inn in So. Pasadena has what one might consider "soft lighting" that's not harsh and flourescent white bright.
And it certainly isn't bright in Sam Woo (in San Gabriel, corner of San Gabriel and Las Tunas), although some might say the entire place is "dark and dingy".
Indian Beer Pub is definitely on the dark side, as is Jurassic Park and Native. They're beer pubs after all, right?
And many Hong Kong style cafes have rather interesting "mood" lighting, better to illuminate the LCD flat screen TVs I suppose.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall that the lighting in the Panda Inn on East Colorado is low.

Hi... I believe the lighting at Genghis Cohen is appropriately mood-conducive to dining and dating; niether too bright nor dim. The adjacent music venue no doubt may contribute to that atmosphere... And while I'm no fan of the outdated decor and pastel hues, the lighting at the vegan-friendly Vegetable Delight in Granada Hills is subdued in its own way. The food and service is solid, too...
