SF - Happy Hour at Anchor & Hope

psb and I met for a drink (well - several) this week at Anchor & Hope.

There are a few mentions of it on the board but nothing specific to Happy Hour. The chief attraction for me is clearly $1 Oysters from 4:30 PM to 6 PM on weekdays, IIRC. They had a fantastic plump and juicy variety from Washington the day we were there. Miles ahead of some other $1 oysters in SF like Grand Cafe and the like. Properly shucked too - which is always a delight.

I had a few pints of Lagunitas IPA - $3 a pop during happy hour. Note for lovers of English ale, they do have a hand pumped ale on tap - only sometimes though ! psb tried a couple of white wines I think and was impressed with their extensive beer list.

I concur with her assessment - I dislike cooked oysters and they tasted like mush compared to the super-crispy fried bacon.

The other item we devoured with wild abandon were the fries - oh the fries - these were really delicious - perfectly crisp and dusted liberally with parmesan. Served with aioli which was also outstanding.

psb stuck around for a bit - maybe you'd like to add your thoughts about dinner ?

  1. Thanks for the heads up on $1 oysters. The website says happy hour is 4:30-6pm, Mon-Fri.

        Indeed, and we had a nice chat about families, the Desi Diaspora, Sirs Rushdie and Naipaul and non-Sir Hitchens. Osho went with the brown, and I stayed with the white ... beer for him and a Champagne and then a Pinot Grigio for me.

        The happy hour menu here somewhat generically just lists a sparkling/red/white/beer, but I'm not sure how often these switch around. But our night the Sparkling = Domain Chandon and the PG had a label which looked familiar, but I dont recall what it was.

        Anyway, fine choice by Osho. For me, a worthy successor to the dear departed TWO/Hawthorne Lane, in the category downtown-happy-hour-with-higher-quality-food. Although I dont believe A&H has a "cocktail program", which may be an HH requirement for some.

        I concur the oysters were at the upper end of what I've had in SF, and the "happy price" was a bonus. We agreed that to do better you had to go with "Hog Island Direct" ... or splurge ... I've had some Beausoleils which were better, but at x2-3 the price.

        Agree 100% on the fries. Best I've had in some time. I'm trying to recall where they were comparable/better ... maybe Bar Tartine? Maybe some potatoes in duck fat at Kokkari?

        Yes, good "bench depth" on the beers, although some are kinda pricey, e.g. the Oskar Blues "Ten Fidy" is $12 ... that's a lot for a *canned* beer :-) I note they have Belgian "Scaldis" ... that's not something I see too often. The bartender said "we have the best beer selection of any resto in SF" ... [i.e. not bar/store]. I suppose Monk's Kettle and La Trappe are somewhere between a bar and resto ... I've only sipped at those two places and never chewed.

        While I concede your point seafood + deep fry = fried food, I thought the bacon as pretty good. I too generally prefer raw to baked/bbq'ed oysters when the oysters are really fresh. However I suppose I'm more susceptible to the lure of bacon than you ... so that tilts my preference from lexicographic to convex, i.e. 5raw + 1angel > 6 raws.

        I cannot imagine going to an A&H HH and *not* getting oysters, while I can imagine not ordering the AonH.

        I ended up getting some kind of "Persimmon Pudding wi/ Caramel Sauce". In retrospect I was a little surprised it was described as a "pudding" ... it seemed more like a mound of persimmon bread. I'd forgotten about the bourbon until just now, but you could definitely taste the alcohol [in a good way]. Overall though, it was a little on the sweet side. The dried currants did add. I was glad they were present in reasonable rather than just notional quantity. i wouldnt get this dessert again, but no regrets ... the motivation was "I dont have persimmon in restaurants often, lets see what they do with this".

        I actually ended up going to The Grove/Fillmore for coffee afterwards, and then to D & A Cafe for Super Late Night Happy Hour Menu [fish burger and the insidious "sausage wrapped with bacon"] for actual "dinner" ... that's how I roll :-

          Sounds like a traditional persimmon pudding, which is a pudding in the British sense, not the American sense.

            Concur with Ruth. Persimmon pudding is a classic take on the British dessert wherein the batter is steamed and not baked. We Americans think of pudding as that insidious gelatin-based goo that comes out of little boxes. For Brits "pudding" means a hefty, stalwart dessert.

                Despite the fact that we think of it as "Jello" pudding, American pudding is not gelatin-based -- it's cornstarch based.

              Yes. that pudding is the real deal - pucca British stuff ! :-) I am not sure persimmons were not that common in the 70's though. I am sure you can get those even at Sainsbury's these days.

              I'm gobsmacked you had the stamina for D & A after all of that food ! I have not been in a while - is it still one of the best 'drunk food' places ever ?

            3. We went there last year for their SF Beer Week Happy Hour - we swore to never return because of bad service. They seem to be operating like they were all new to the business: the host ignored us for way too long, our waiter walked around in circles before taking our order then forgot our drink order. Plus, for a Beer Week event...they had nothing all that special to offer.
              The happy hour menu isn't that different from Farallon in price and offerings - but Farallon has always provided us with quality service.

                Farallon: champagne in my lap (due to resto staff, not drunk self or tablemate)

                So YMMV ... especially over long time scales (i havent been to f'lon since it was a hot dot-com ticket).

                The chairs at the A&H bar are pretty crowded together but when we were there not too many people there, so not a problem. Maybe a problem at other times. The hostess at the door was nice enough ... not much interaction. We didnt interact much with the bartender, but to was nice of him to make my "lunch cooler" at dinner time ... it clearly was some work for him because these weird ingredients had been packed away in the fridge and saran covered etc, and while probably high margins for the resto, they werent expensive drinks, so marginal tip wasnt big.

                But just to be clear, my raves are about the food not the service at AH. Just no service problems.
