Creative food in Tallahasee, anything better than Cypress for dinner?

I have to make my semi-annual pilgrimage to Tally town to visit family and such, hoping for a good meal, anything as of late that is > Cypress? Looking for creative dishes / small plates.

I know of Mozaik (which I dig) but one of our group had a bad experience there so that's a no go. Food glorious food was miserable last time I went. Mockingbird cafe seems like it's more of a bar at night? Not sure about hop & vine either, maybe i'll hit that for lunch?

Thanks guys!!

  1. Try Sage, just "around the corner " from Moziak.

Sage always good. Newest game in town: Avenue Eat and Drink on Park Avenue. Not tried it, but looks interesting.

Is that the place that took over Urbane's space? I think the owner used be affiliated with Cafe Carbernet.

Will try to check it out. I'm sure it'll be a long time before the one-hand clappers and the doll nose lady in the TD get around to reviewing this, if ever.

steakman- thanks for the heads-up, might have to check it out. a couple cool things on the menu (fried quail with sausage and oyster cream, and pork belly)

crewsweeper- if you could get over there today or tomorrow you'd be my best buddy haha

Ate at Avenue about 6 weeks ago. Overall a good experience, folks in my party really enjoyed the short ribs and the fried quail, and the pork belly as an appetizer was a hit.

I had the chicken with Meyer lemons, which was pretty tasty, but nothing to write home about.

It's not as good as Cypress, but if you're looking to mix it up a bit it's definitely a worthwhile spot!

Gotcha. Looks like Cypress it is.

Mockingbird is really good! They have two separate rooms--one just a dining room and the other is where the music & bar are. You can't hear the music from the dining room.

Went with my mom for brunch one day--I had the chicken & waffles, which was delicious & she had some sandwich that I don't remember. Also went for dinner and had duck breast with some kind of cherry/balsamic reduction, a goat cheese cake, and sweet potato hash. duck was super tender and I loved it. Mom had the crab cakes--equally delicious. The menu is pretty diverse...lots of different "themes," one was a kind of Moroccan chicken tagine, also saw a paella-type dish.

As for the bar, go on Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday and look for Korey--awesome bartender. I go for drinks often, great atmosphere.

Lunch at Mockingbird yesterday was pretty good.
Chicken salad plate--nice fresh veggies, olives, dill in the chicken salad.
Great portabello mushroom sandwich! And really good ice tea.

                    can't ask for more...

      2. People at my Publix cooking class got into a discussion of good restaurants in Tallahassee. Having worked in Tallahassee only since December 2010, I madly scribbled down names as they talked. I hope that I got them written down correctly. Here is the list they came up with, although I have no idea whether these are places that opened yesterday or twenty years ago. These restaurants are listed in no particular order of quality: Chez Pierre, Kool Beanz, Bella Bella, Sage, Mozaik, Mocking Bird Cafe, Food Glorious Food, Tucker Blue, Mint 101 (apparently for their martinis only) and Cypress.
