Daddy O's Cafe
Mrs. Wineguy and I dropped-in on Daddy O’s for lunch today. It opened in the old Schnitzelhaus location last month. I’m glad to see something go in there. I only wish I liked this restaurant better. Perhaps with time they will work out some of the kinks.
As an interesting option, Mrs. Wineguy chose three side dishes as her lunch. They were Collard Greens, Mac n Cheese, and Tomato and Okra Stew. The plate included a small corn muffin. Collards were good and well seasoned, mac was decent and cheesy, tomato and okra was very bland. The corn muffin was tasty, a little sweet, and very small.
I ordered Fried Chicken, asked for white meat and was told by our server that the portions were coming out very skimpy, but she would make sure I got a decent sized portion. The plate that came out was large, but the food was small. The chicken was a wing and two chicken breast pieces that were perhaps part of a half breast cut into smaller chunks. I liked the chicken a lot, but thought the portion size was too small. The chicken was well seasoned and had a fine, softer coating that had a very home made quality to it. The plate also came with some so-so mashed potatoes and gravy, one of those corn muffins mentioned above and my choice of sides from their list. I chose Red Beans and Rice, which were tasty and meaty, if under seasoned.
Some of their desserts are made in-house, while others come from a nearby bakery. We had a “Pecan Pie Cupcake” which was a vanilla cupcake with a pecan pie topping. It was very good, though too small. We also had a slice of their Pecan Pie after initially ordering the Sweet Potato Pie (“not ready to serve, too jiggly”) and then asking for a slice of the Chocolate Pecan Pie (“I couldn’t get it out of the pan”). The pecan pie was good and fresh, and seemed a little boozy.
Our server was extremely nice and obviously frustrated with the kitchen.
