Best Pub Food - Calgary
Not sure if this topic has ever been talked about. Are there any pubs in the city that deliver what could be considered exceptional "pub food"??

We eat alot of pub food, and enjoy "The Blind Beggar" pub on McLeod Tr, SW, the taco salad is the best I've ever had!
They have specials every day, we've eaten there several times and always been happy!
The Garrison is introducing it's new pizza parlour next door, we had a sample that Richard was bringing around the pub and it's the best I've ever had in Calgary, thin crust!
They were supposed to open it in April but I don't think it has yet...anyone know? -
I normally try to avoid chains, but Original Joe's (Marda Loop location) has an awesome 2 piece fish and chips for only $12.99. The batter is thin and crispy - the fish flaky and so moist ... the tartar sauce has a nice kick to it. Plus a mountain of golden brown fries with dark gravy on the side... I have a huge appetite and I have to share this...

Wild Rose definitely deserves a mention - though it'll be interesting to see what happens with their menu now that the market is gone, as they used to source many of their ingredients from next door. I'd also throw in a vote for the District, best combo of food and beer offerings in Calgary.

I'll second the Bottlehouse. The food is definitely a step above the typical pub fare. I personally like going to the Bottlehouse because it's not quite a busy and loud as the other pubs in Kensington and the patio in the summer is nice. Hopefully the corner is no longer cursed because I'd hate to see this one go.

Also, the Ship and Anchor has a good burger, and the pizza at Watchman's is surprisingly good. Nice Pizza at Hop N Brew too.

Another vote for Local 522. Interesting and fun take on "pub food", great atmosphere, and fair prices. I'd definitely place their food offerings above even venerable places like the Ship & Anchor (great place, but only OK food). The attached photo shows a tasty, though tidy (read: smallish), burger with bacon and eggs, accompanied by a REALLY good side salad.
I would also suggest the District. Again, thoughtful and inventive twists on pub staples, high quality food, and a great atmosphere and price-point.
For high quality execution of standard pub fare, I'd suggest the Kensington Pub.

Love Local 522. Especially calamari, mussels and yam fries. The burger is tasty, but personally I love Ship's fully loaded burger with yam fries. Also, 522 has some reasonably priced wines. Personal favourite is Liberty School cab for only $8.00 a glass!

re: marcopolo
Maybe I caught Local 002 on a bad night.
Having heard lots of good about them and the other "Locals" we stopped in there once. Indifferent service, although if we were younger/trendier, we felt we would have received better service. Food was marginally above average and portion size small for the price.
Haven't been back; there's lots of decent pubs in this town without having to give a second chance to one.
Back on to the good:
The Garrison over by My Favourite Ice Cream Shop. Interesting menu, pretty much seems like nothing comes in frozen or in a can. Never been disappointed when we've gone there.

I've only been to Local 522 so I can't speak for L 002. I do find the service varies, depending on who is working but it doesn't bother me. I thought the appies were larger than the mains. For example, the pot of mussels are huge, plus you get garlic bread and some fries on top! Go on a Tuesday when the appies are half price or during happy hour, so that if the experience doesn't meet your expectations, at least it will be cheap.

Riverstone Pub on 14th and Northmount has excellent, fresh food (haven't been there in 3 or 4 years, though).
the dog and duck off MacLeod has great uk-style pub fare, with everything apparently made from scratch. i highly recommend the fish and chips pizza... i know it sounds weird, but it absolutely works.
