Chinese Food Delivery in Kitsilano Area for tonight - recommendation needed

islandgirl Jan 8, 2011 02:31 PM

Can anyone suggest a place to get Chinese delivered from to the Kitsilano area?

My usual places won't deliver this far west

    Wins's on 4th- none better.

So I just finished eating my order from Win's. The delivery was exactly on time (45mins). I ordered the Breaded Almond Chicken which was very good (light, crispy batter, not too greasy, good sized portion). Unfortunately the BeanCurd with Mixed Vegetables was bland in flavour, had way too much sauce and the veggies were over cooked. The BBQ Pork Chow Mein was better but still too much sauce, very thin noodles which were sort of in a big lump at the bottom with the toppings...well, on top. Veggies were pretty overcooked as well although I was pleased with the amount of vegetables and pork in the topping...not skimpy.

So, not an overwhelming success but perhaps ordering other dishes would be better (as per Grayelf's post)?

I think generally, most take-out dishes will be inferior in taste and presentation than if they were served and eaten right at the restaurant. That's inevitable.

Was your 45-mins starting from hanging up the phone ?

I've had good take-outs from Tang's, but admit at the time I lived within 5 mins of them by delivery.

I believe Tang's Noodle House (Broadway @ MacDonald) delivers. As does Iron Wok (4th @ Alma), and China Kitchen and Connie's Cookhouse, both on 4th just west of MacDonald.

Also Ginger & Chili on 10th @ Trimble:

Further to the OP's post, what is good from the places mentioned?

How is Ginger & Chili? Our usual stand-by Lucky Star on Dunbar changed hands and apparently my family is in dire need of hot & sour soup tonight (early flu symptom or is it just the rain?).
Other thoughts on westside Chinese delivery options also welcome.

Ginger & Chili is not bad for take-out. A combo for 1 usually feeds 2 people comfortably. Their vegetables are decent, and their ginger beef is great. Stay away from most of the deep-fried items - their oil must be stale or something.

Ridge Gardens Restaurant (Arbutus @ 15th) is pretty good, but I'm going from memory from the late 90's/early 00's when we lived in the area. Never done take-out, tho'

Thanks for the reply. We tried Ginger and Chili. Very fast delivery. The vegetables were indeed nicely crunchy and the crispy skin half chicken was perfect for the kids. The portions were generous. It was a split vote on the H&S soup. I like mine red and basically crappy, this was clear and I thought way too salty, but SO loved it. So maybe I was just going into sodium shock after pho for lunch...

China Kitchen is pretty terrible - oversauced and oversalty.

islandgirl - which are your usual places?

I have to say that my favourite for delivery has always been New Sun on Cambie. It's definately "Chinese-Canadian" food (i.e. not particularly authentic) but when I'm getting delivery that's what I look for. I've found that more authentic Chinese cooking really does need to be "a'la minute" and doesn't travel well.
New Sun's portions are huge, inexpensive, the food is tasty and, most important, the veggies are always crisp and perfectly cooked even after travel time.
Unfortunately, they require a min. order of $40 to delivery to Kitsilano and it's usually just me ordering so I was looking for an option that wouldnt leave me with 4 days of food!
