German potato salad
Can anyone recommend a store, deli, whatever in Northern Virginia where I can get German potato salad? I much prefer the German version because it's not weighed down with mayonnaise as most other types of potato salad are. I was surprised that the German Gourmet Deli on Columbia Pike doesn't even carry it on a regular basis. Any recommendations would be most appreciated. Thanks.

My mom is from Germany and I grew up eating her potato salad...yes, when freshly made...still slightly warm from the cooked potatoes...otherwise chilled when refrigerated. I do not mean to get technical...like others have mentioned there are endless variations on potato salad or salads in general. Fresh is best.

In DC, not NOVA, but the deli at Cafe Mozart has excellent, authentic German potato salad. They do serve it warm at the restaurant, but I prefer it vastly more chilled. They also have an Austrian version. Sausages as well as butter cheese which is as good as it sounds.

GG does have a list of other places to try, in a pamphlet.
Oddly enough, the one thing I think Brickskeller used to well was their potato salad. I don't like the dish normally and theirs was warm, vinegary and good. But I don't know what the new ownership will do.
GG is accomodating. I would ask them in the near term and they should be able to fill the order or guide you.

re: Dennis S
Thanks a lot. German potato salad is supposed to be served warm, so it looks like the Brickskeller served it the authentic way. I appreciate your recommendation. I'll stop by the German Gourmet deli tomorrow.

There are endless variations of potato salad, and yes, there are even endless variations of german potato salad -- not all of which are served warm. I far prefer them chilled or room temperature.
To get the best experience I do recommend making your own. Lots of good recipes out there on the interwebs.
