Theater District pre-matinee lunch??

Will be in Theater District for a Wednesday matinee. Need recs for a moderately priced place for lunch. Doesn't have to have great food as long as it has good food. We won't know which theater we will be attending until we check availability at the Times Sq discount ticket booth Wednesday AM.

  1. Please define "moderately priced" in specific dollar amounts.

Pan: Good question. As a thrifty New Englander, I visit NYC expecting prices for anything to be out of sight, and they often are, but in checking Becco (recommended in other threads) I find a 17.95 prix fixe lunch, which is about right for me.

We'd call that cheap here in New York, not moderate. With the caveat that I haven't been to Becco in years, I found it underwhelming.

BillyBob gave you good recommendations. The Greek restaurant he refers to is Dafni. The portions there are humongous to a truly ridiculous degree - seriously - so keep that in mind when you order, and order half of what you think you normally would. If you go to Wondee, I advise for you to get only items on the "Secret Thai" menu (and any specials from the Thai-only menu, but they'll probably refuse to tell you any, as they refused to tell me any last night) and ask for them spicy and Thai style, if you can handle chili.

Gazala Place is really great, but depending on what you order, it may cost you more than $17.95. ;-)

Thanks Pan. All the recs received look promising. We are looking forward to lunch in NYC. And 17.95 is not a ceiling.

    2. Lattanza's is a lot of fun. Esca is more fun, but more money.

As a thrifty New Englander as well, I would suggest Gazala Place if you like middle eastern (Israeli). Bread is fantastic, food great, decor, though, virtually non-existent). I like Becco too. Also a reasonably good Greek place on 42nd between 8th and 9th (north side). Good Thai on 9th Ave, Wondee Siam and/or Pam's Real THai. Would be helpful to know cuisine preference and/or need for ambience over food quality.

BillyBob: Thanks for the recs. Middle eastern, Greek and Thai are all possibilities. Ambience not important. Cleanliness and reasonably fast service are. Do you recall the name of the Greek place?
