Tiki Drinks?
Where can I get a good tiki drinks- during daylight hours too? Tiki Ti always seems to be closed when i try to go, and Formosa for a Mai Tai doesn't open until 6 on weekends. Trader Vic's drinks - while good have way too much ice and the drink is gone in a few sips. Any suggestions? Would prefer east over west side of town. Pasadena/Glendale area is good, so is Silverlake, Los Feliz, etc.

Highly coincidental that the LA Times actually featured a story today about a place in North Hollywood called Tiki No. See this blog http://thetikichick.com/2010/12/04/tiki-no-bar-north-hollywood-ca/ for a nice write up and I'll link to the LAT's story in a couple of minutes. If you look at the blog story it has what looks to be a fairly comprehensive list of Tiki bars & Tiki drink places along the right hand side of the story.

re: Servorg
And, while geographically further from OP's ideal territory, I just noticed today that the former Sam's Seafood in Huntington Beach is now being converted to Don the Beachcomber - sounds like Tiki drinks are on the horizon in the OC.

If your ever in the South Bay (just an FYI = I haven't tried it):
Old Tony's - Redondo Beach Pier:
1) Bar opens at 11:30 a.m.
2) 7 days a week
3) Top of Tony's - Great view of the PacificMaybe a little too touristy, but Scroll down for a paragraph....

If you're willing to venture out that way, try the Tonga Hut, on Victory in North Hollywood. It is an authentic tiki bar that's been around since the 50s. It doesn't open until 4 PM, but usually isn't a mob scene like Tiki Ti can be. Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to find much that's open for lunchtime tiki cocktails.

I don't know if they're technically tiki drinks, but I love the fruity drinks at the Good Luck Bar (right by Tiki Ti). I don't think it's open during the day though...
There's also Ivy at the Shore - again, maybe not technically tiki, but it does have a tropical vibe. I love the Ivy gimlet.

re: wilafur
The atmosphere at Bahooka is exactly as it should be, in my not-at-all-humble opinion. That was one of the last places my late pa-in-law requested we take him, and we all enjoyed the experience, and the drinks, immensely (the food, well, it was edible). If that ancient fish by the cash register is still alive, be sure to get the demo of why you should not stick your fingers in there …

re: ipsedixit
After 2 or 3 of their flaming bowls I could find the paper napkins edible, I suspect. Don't know because I was the driver …
I did enjoy what I ate there, but as I remember absolutely nothing else about it it must not have been terribly interesting. I just remember sitting amongst all that gurgling/bubbling, which had An Effect on both Papa and me, causing us to have to leave the table and subsequently refuse further water refills.

re: ipsedixit
I know. The effect is still deadly. We have photos of an evening at a Tiki joint in Nashville (since long gone), with six or eight of us sucking from a giant flaming bowl through long pipelines constructed of straws joined end to end. I seem to recall at some point trying VERY hard to say "pupu platter" …
