Looking for fresh from-the-farm chicken ...

j
jimnorton Jan 5, 2011 11:52 AM

I can't seem to find farm raised chicken merchants at any of the greenmarkets. The vendors who sell eggs, do not sell chickens. Is there anywhere in Manhattan where one can buy from-the-farm chickens? Please do not point me to Whole Foods.
Thanks.

Thanks SO much everyone! Looks like I'll take a pass on a Weds visit and pop by Friday or Saturday morning.

Hi, can anyone speak to the quality of any of these vendors?

      Wednesdays at Union Square
      Arcadian Pastures

      Fridays at Union Square
      Fazio Farm
      Flying Pigs Farm
Grazin' Angus Acres (June-Oct they have chicken)

      Saturdays at Union Square
      Flying Pigs Farm
Grazin' Angus Acres (June-Oct they have chicken)
      Quattro's Game Farm
      Violet Hill

Planning on buying a chicken this week and hoping some of you can chime in beyond violet hill and flying pig.

I can attest to the quality of Quattro's. I buy lots of birds from them - always good.

Dickson's Farmstand at Chelsea Market has excellent chickens from PA, delivered freshly killed a couple of times a week. I've come to like these even more than those from Violet Hill.

I second Dickson's! Have never tried any of the other vendors listed above, but compared to any other chickens I've tried from more mainstream outlets, they're really incredible. A completely different experience.

Thanks SO much, I actually picked up a bird from Dickson's today. They said they are amish, no hormones, cage free. The bird was pulled out of the oven about 15 mins ago and my hubby's about to carve it up.

              Will be back with reviews...

I can attest to the quality of Grazin' Angus Acres. I've bought chicken from them on several occasions and it was fresh and delicious every time.

You might also check Eataly if you strike out at the Union Square market (which shouldn't be the case, but sometimes timing and luck work against us)... New Amsterdam Market usually has at least one booth (such as Stone Barns) with a limited amount of fresh of the farm poultry.

When in doubt ask the informational booth at Union Square Greenmarket which farms might have it. Contact those farms ahead of time if you need it for a specific date.

What greenmarket have you been to? The Union Square Greenmarket has several vendors that sell farm-fresh chickens on various days.

Second Violet Hill. Those things are amazing. Also, don't forget to ask at different farmer's stands even if they don't look like chicken farmers. I got a great chicken from Flying Pigs which of course raised pork most of the time.

I think there are fresh chickens at USQ Greenmarket most Fridays and every Saturday. They can be pricey but they are well worth it. I wrote a blog post about how to make pastured chickens more affordable by stretching it through several meals.
