Looking for fresh from-the-farm chicken ...
I can't seem to find farm raised chicken merchants at any of the greenmarkets. The vendors who sell eggs, do not sell chickens. Is there anywhere in Manhattan where one can buy from-the-farm chickens? Please do not point me to Whole Foods.
Thanks.

You might also check Eataly if you strike out at the Union Square market (which shouldn't be the case, but sometimes timing and luck work against us)... New Amsterdam Market usually has at least one booth (such as Stone Barns) with a limited amount of fresh of the farm poultry.

When in doubt ask the informational booth at Union Square Greenmarket which farms might have it. Contact those farms ahead of time if you need it for a specific date.

re: Yaxpac
Second Violet Hill. Those things are amazing. Also, don't forget to ask at different farmer's stands even if they don't look like chicken farmers. I got a great chicken from Flying Pigs which of course raised pork most of the time.
I think there are fresh chickens at USQ Greenmarket most Fridays and every Saturday. They can be pricey but they are well worth it. I wrote a blog post about how to make pastured chickens more affordable by stretching it through several meals.
