Hello, I know my request is tight and would really appreciate if you can share some ideas.
I would like to host a casual cocktail event on a Sat or Sunday with close friends and family. I am paying for the entire event and have a rather small budget. A classy venue would be great, whether a historical building or a cozy restaurant. Thinking of having the party late Jan or early Feb. Thanks so much!

You might try A Taste of Quebec in the Distillery. As an event space, it`s nice, and you might be able to get a special occasion permit (if you even need one) and supply your own bar. Good chefs on hand as well. Your budget is an obstacle though, unless it`s food only with cash bar.

I went to an artist`s show at 93 Harbord, which had a number of communal plates of hors-d`ouevres which was probably done reasonably.

I was at LouDawgs on the weekend (for their brunch, another post to follow about that) and I saw signs in the washroom about having christmas parties/etc there. Sounded like there would be no room rental fees, just pay for the food. It is pretty nice/cozy inside (I wouldn't think it from the street level), might be worth passing by and talking to someone there.

Find a small resto/bar that has some decent food and call the owner. Likely the only option will be a Sun but nonetheless it will be the best option you can do with this type of a budget. They will count on the cash bar to bring in the money and the $600 of food is more or less a lost liter to get you and your friends to buy drinks on what could be a slow night.

I think you are right and lots of pubs around town have private rooms or will let a group take over an area. Google 'pub private room toronto' and a ch thread with many suggestions will come up.

i hate to be pessimistic, but I don't think you can do that with your budget. I recently looked at renting similar venues on a Saturday and the least expensive I could find was $500 just for the room rental! Then you are dealing with caterers as most venues don't allow you to bring outside food or drink. Also, you have to consider the cost of special LCBO permit and likely liability insurance.

Do you or any friend/family member have access to a party room in their condo? That makes your venue FREE. Then, if you are not culinarily inclined, you can get some meat/cheese/dips/veggie/fruit platters from Loblaws and buy your own liquor and wine. Or, you could run an ad in Craiglist and have a chef cater your event for a reasonable price.
